1141.0. "Class legal Hobie" by KRAPPA::RHODES () Thu Mar 02 1989 21:43

I purchased a used 16' Hobie cat last year and this summer I want
to enter into a couple of regatta's. How would I find out about
    upcoming regatta's and register etc?

Also I've been hearing about the boat being class legal.
What does this mean and what implications does it have on modifications
    and changes to the boat?

    Thanks Jim Rhodes.

To regattas in your area, contact (and maybe join) your local Hobie
fleet. If you need info on this I can get it for you.

As for "Class legal", class racing is done between boats of the
same design. In this way, the better sailer wins the race, not
the faster boat. In general, any modifications to a boat that
will improve speed or handling are not class legal, i.e. more sail
area, reducing weight etc. Modifications intended to enhance
safety are allowed. Your Hobie fleet can give you a complete list
of the Hobie class regs. Also, when ordering parts, most catalogs
and stores can tell you if a part is class legal.

    Enjoy,
    Jeff

Hey Jim where do you live???

The latest issue of Hobie HOtline has all the races for all
the divisions in the US. I'll post the New England schedule next
    week.

It also has all the hundreds of fleets throughtout the world
along with the contact name and address.

Come mid April, there should be a learn to race, try a new sized
boat day coming to most areas. Local racers will help you rig your
boat and show you the finer points of racing along with an introduction
    to the rules.

This year's Commodore's theme is for everyone to introduce a new person
to the Hobie lifestyle (good racing, friends, locations, and stories).
If any of you in the 3M area want to find out more, send me a mail.

the learn to sail date in New England will be in late june instead
of late May. Last year it snowed on them, so they do not wish to
take any chances. The exact date and location is not final yet.

The is a 100 mile race from Ct to Ri being scheduled for the same
timeframe. As I find out more(thinking about trying it), I'll post it here.
