1137.1 | I'll pay to avoid them | TALLIS::KLOTZ | | Wed Mar 01 1989 11:22 | 35 |
| For all it's worth - I recommend you understand up front what your
dealing with before buying from Anchor.
I bought a lot of stuff from them when I commissioned my last boat
because they were close to the boat.
They indeed are NOT friendly nor plesant to deal with. And if you
have any problems are a royal pain to deal with.
You can spen thousands of $$$ & they won't even give you a catalogue
unless you pay for it.
If something needs repair or warrenty work watch out -- they are
sloppy, slow & get top dollar for "assistance".
Also their knowledge is VERY shallow.
If you have the knowledge yourself bear in mind that Boat US will
not be undersold on any product they carry.
(Hmmm- Anchor says the same - I wonder if I could get gear for free??)
If you are lacking in knowledge & are willing to pay a few bucks
for a friend, with a lot of compentency, who stands behind his stuff,
andis willing to teach you about your purchase - I really like the
folks down at ELCO Electronics.
Anchor has a purpose in life including good prices; but, hope all
goes well.
Frankly I've told Steve at Anchor point blank I'd rather pay 10% more than
deal with him on principle.
Take care,
Lou "Phanta Sea"

1137.2 | Voyager Marine | ECAD2::FINNERTY | | Wed Mar 01 1989 19:47 | 13 |

If you're looking for discount prices with informed and helpful
salespeople, try Voyager marine (electronics) in Essex, Mass.
Their prices are/were almost the same as Anchor's, but the advice
and availability of service is much better. Voyager is a small
business that sells mostly LORANs and VHFs and does repair work.
They're a little out of the way (on Cape Ann), but worth considering
if you're about to spend some money on electronics.

1137.3 | Boat/US meets Anchor's prices | MOORED::GERSTLE | | Thu Mar 02 1989 10:53 | 15 |
| RE .1 - Lou was quite correct. Boat/US not only stands behind their Best
Price guarantee (I should have remebered that - I have used it before),
but they even knew what Anchor was charging for their boat show prices
and agreed to meet them (you even save the shipping charge if you live
close to a Boat/US marine center).
Sooo - Anchor can provide you with seemingly good prices, THEN think about
buying from much friendlier and more helpful folks at Boat/US.
I am (once again) quite satisfied with Boat/US ... but many thanks to Anchor
Electronics for providing nice low prices to be matched!

1137.4 | Chapter 11?? | MILKWY::WAGNER | | Thu Mar 29 1990 13:12 | 12 |

Another point....
I'm not sure of the details, but some scuttlebutt I overheard went
something like Anchor went 'momentarily' belly-up, leaving some
folks here on the south shore holding the bag, rather than equipment
they'd paid for....
They do, however, seem to be as much in business as ever...
Just another caveat for all youse emptors...
PS hey! when do I get to splash???
