1135.0. "Gaffers & rub rails" by ELWOOD::DRECHSLER (Tom) Wed Feb 22 1989 17:15

    I,m writing this to login, mostly. Am interested in other gaff-rig
    owner/sailors. Isail a 31' Lawley built out of Jamestown, RI, And
    have been sailin around the south RI shore for the last three years.
    In particular, I'm interested in anyone with experience replacing
    rub rails. I'm looking for a local supplier of teak shaped to order,
    probably in 16' lengths. Marine Exchange refered me to H&L out
    of Compton, CA, but I'm afraid of the shipping. Anyhow .. anyone
    wishing to swap horror stories about maintaing boats older than
    their sires, feel free to drop a line. Incidently, I'm @ TOPS in
    Marlboro, MA

I suggest you call Boulter's Plywood in Somerville for your teak needs. I
don't know if they do custom shaping, but they will cut smaller pieces to
order. They carry both marine ply and other boatbuilding woods. I have not
actually bought any teak from them, so I urge you to call them first.

Another possibility is to check with a a wooden boat buider. These people
certainly have their sources of teak and could do any custom shaping
required.

1135.2PALMER and PARKER, TewksburyCSSE::GARDINERArchitects-R-UsThu Feb 23 1989 11:0323
    A company the will supply ANY hardwood in ANY length available and
    will (for a fee) cut it to any shape is located just down the street
    from the Dascomb Road Field Service Logistics facility. It is called
    Palmer and Parker and they are a Hardwood wholesaler, but do sell
    retail on Friday afternoons. You should call first to check.

    They are in the yellow pages. I don't have the info here, but if
    you want more detail I can get some slips I have at home and let
    you know more.

    Prices are very good for bulk. Last Spring I bought a piece of
    teak (handpicked) that was 10" wide, 4" thick, and 8' long. It
    weighed 55lbs! Cost $105.00. I have bought a lot of mahogany and
    teak from them and find the wood excellent and the prices great.
    Service is less than perfect and you really need to know what you
    want. They do have milling capabilities, but will not finish cut,
    only rough size.

    Good Luck,
    Jeff
