| See note 502 and replies for my liveaboard experiences.
Part of the reason we started living aboard was that we couldn't afford
both a boat and a house. But that was really a secondary reason. I
knew, even before moving aboard, that the lifestyle suited me better
than living ashore. It's not just that I can take my boat sailing at
a moments notice (I can't. I takes an hour to get it ready!) because
I would rather live on my boat even if I could never go out.
My biggest concern, now is that I won't be able to do it for much
longer. I feel that, in the not too distant future, I will be either
priced out or legislated out of my lifestyle. Since I moved abooard
in August '85 slip rent has increased about 80% (from $55.00/ft to
$95.00/ft for the summer) and I see no slowing of that trend. I also
believe that liveaboards are going to become political scapegoats in
the harbor clean-up project.
While I didn't experience the trepidation you feel about moving aboard,
I believe I understand it. Because we need more room we are considering
moving from our sailboat to a trawler. That, to me, is about as scary
as moving from shore to a boat is for most people.
I don't think living aboard in the BVI's for a week or two will tell
you whether or not living aboard is for you. I think you just have to
know it. And if you feel that it's for you then go for it. I can't think
of a better way to live!!!
