1076.0. "Why Live aboard?" by DPDMAI::CLEVELAND () Thu Dec 22 1988 09:51

    Okay all you live-aboards, here's the opportunity to tell the
    world why you did it and how much you love it!! :-)

    Did any of you begin to live aboard your boat to help pay it off
    faster? Liked water beds and wanted the real thing? etc...

    What were the issues you contemplated before living aboard your
    craft? What would you do different next time? What special problems
    arise when living aboard? How large is your boat? Is there really
    a different mind-set you must adapt to when living aboard when you
    are in the corporate grind vs. vacationing in the BVI's over the
    summer??

1076.2BECAUSE WE LOVE IT!VAXWRK::STANGELThu Dec 22 1988 16:2629
    See note 502 and replies for my liveaboard experiences.

    Part of the reason we started living aboard was that we couldn't afford
    both a boat and a house. But that was really a secondary reason. I
    knew, even before moving aboard, that the lifestyle suited me better
    than living ashore. It's not just that I can take my boat sailing at
    a moments notice (I can't. I takes an hour to get it ready!) because
    I would rather live on my boat even if I could never go out.

    My biggest concern, now is that I won't be able to do it for much
    longer. I feel that, in the not too distant future, I will be either
    priced out or legislated out of my lifestyle. Since I moved abooard
    in August '85 slip rent has increased about 80% (from $55.00/ft to
    $95.00/ft for the summer) and I see no slowing of that trend. I also
    believe that liveaboards are going to become political scapegoats in
    the harbor clean-up project.

    While I didn't experience the trepidation you feel about moving aboard,
    I believe I understand it. Because we need more room we are considering
    moving from our sailboat to a trawler. That, to me, is about as scary
    as moving from shore to a boat is for most people.

    I don't think living aboard in the BVI's for a week or two will tell
    you whether or not living aboard is for you. I think you just have to
    know it. And if you feel that it's for you then go for it. I can't think
    of a better way to live!!!
