The bay is a great place to sail while you are restoring and
sailing your boat. After awhile, when you spend more time sailing
than working on it, the idea of being at the North end of the
bay becomes a bore. No, that is not really correct. Its just that
further off points call, while the time involved in the run down
the bay quite often precludes. You are usually bucking SW winds
so you end up motoring more that I would like

I'm bringing my boat home for the winter for the first time. I am
seriously thinking of driving the extra distance and getting down
to Dutch Harbor. I'm not sure what will be available, or what will
even be affordable next year!!!! What I have found is that most
everything I want to do now is outside the bay and it takes three
hours under power just to get to where I really want to begin to
    sail.

I know your annoyance with the Fog! But this has been a bad
year for that area as well, If not fog, one heck of a haze. Have
actually been able to sail the Bay a lot of times when fog shut
down everything outside Newport. That is a plus for the bay actually.

It is a nice looking area. There is a lot of local cruising you
can do. You can run into Warren or Bristol or Jamestown or Newport,
etc. almost regardless of the weather because of the proximity of
    Navigational aids.

Well, that's 1/2 my two bits

    Don

One other aspect, I leave my boat on the hook in Newport from time
to time. I have one of the lauch drivers keep an "eye" on it.

At the northeast corner of the bay is the Tiverton/Portsmouth area.
In Portsmouth there are two good boatyards named Brewer's and
Lighthouse. Brewer's usually has moorings and slips to rent for
the season. There may be a few spots left to drop your own mooring,
but they will be remote and there is no commercial launch service.
In the central west side of the bay is Warwick and East Greenwich.
You can rent or drop a mooring there also. On the east side of
Conanicut island (south end of the bay) is Jamestown harbor, moorings
can be rented only. On the west side of Conanicut island is Dutch
Harbor, one of my favorite areas. You should be able to drop your
own mooring there, no launch service available. If you want to sail
the ocean, Dutch Harbor is your best bet (Newport is full and a
    summer mob scene).
