991.0. "Knowledgeable Westerbeke User??" by HPTP27::SCHLESS () Mon Sep 26 1988 10:14

    I'm having a problem with a Westerbeke Vira engine, and
    can't fuigure what's wrong....

    The engine starts and runs fine. Suddenly, it starts losing
    power, and very slowly dies. The engine can be started
    again after several minutes, and will run for 2 - 4 minutes,
    then repeat the problem.

    We run the engine off a 6 gal outboard tank, which is directly
    connected via a short rubber hose to a standard copper gasoline
    line. The tank was 1/2 refilled several weeks ago.

    The boat is coming out of the water in a couple of weeks, and I
    hate to take it in for a tune up this late in the season.

    Has anyone had similar problems? If so, will you drop me
    a lie on HYEND::RSCHLESS ??
    Thanks!

    Beau

991.1Clogged vent??EMASS::SAFDIEMon Sep 26 1988 10:365

    Could the vent on the 6 gallon can be clogged? You might try running
    it with the cover on the can off and see if it goes away. Just a
    guess but easy enough to try.

991.2fuel not flowing freelyCADSYS::SCHUMANNMon Sep 26 1988 12:428
	This symptom is typical of problems in the liquid portion of the fuel
	system. It could be caused by anything that inhibits the free flow
	of fuel from the tank to the engine. Typical culprits are:
	closed or clogged vent, clogged fuel filter and/or strainer,
	kink in fuel hose, etc.

    1) Water (assuming your engine is a diesel )

    You say,you refilled your tank a few weeks ago. You got some water and
    this water is now in the prefilter (or fine filter on some models)
    just in front of the injectionpump.
    You better check immediatly, otherwise your injectionpump and injectors
    have to be replaced.Due to the high pressure used in the injection
    there is now lubrication possible except the dieselfuel.If this diesel
    fuel is replaced by water......

991.4AIR IN LINES ?WILVAX::LANEMon Sep 26 1988 13:385
    I'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM DUE TO AIR IN FUEL LINE. OPEN BLEEDER
    SCREW ON FUEL FILTER WITH ENGINE RUNNING OR AT LEAST CRANKING.
    CLOSE WHEN FUEL RATHER THAN AIR IS COMING FROM BLEEDER.

991.5Great Suggestions! Thanks!HPTP27::SCHLESSThu Sep 29 1988 11:175
    Grazi millia for the suggestions! Will try them this weekend.

991.6No Go!HPTP27::SCHLESSMon Oct 03 1988 10:1710
    I tried the tank vent, and the fuel line, to no avail. The
    boat gets yanked in a couple of weeks, so I think I'll give
    up until I get her onto dry land. Too bad, we missed the most
    glorious day of the season on BB yesterday!

    See y'all next season!

991.7Knowledgeable Westerbeke Vire Owner, finally!HPTP27::SCHLESSMon Oct 31 1988 08:4014
    I now count myself as one of the bruised knuckle "experts"
    on the Westerbeke, if anyone is having problems. Over the
    past two weekends I have pretty well disassembled mine, and
    (remembering I had not drained the saltwater from the cooling)
    reassembled it, and, lo and behold...it ran!

    Anyone needing help on a Westerbeke Vire??

    By the way, the original problem was an air leak in the flexible
    gas line coming from the copper into the bottom of the carb.
