987.0. "Experience with Cummins Diesel?" by RAINBO::BURR () Mon Sep 19 1988 16:11

    I am looking into re-powering my boat. I currently have a 1970
vintage Perkins 4-108 which is rated at 38hp. While the engine
is in perfect condition, it is too small to adequately drive the
boat in any kind of seaway. Giffy Full suggested to me that I look
into engines in the 80hp range. I have discovered that they are
EXPENSIVE!!!! In fact, a Westerbeke of that size is about $9000
(gag, wheeze) and a Volvo is about the same.

I have discovered that Cummins Diesel has recently come out with
    a new 80hp 4 cylinder diesel called a 4B3.9-M. The quoted price
for the unit, including Borg-Warner reduction/reverse gear and controls
is only (only-HA) about $5500. The Cummins engineer says that the
engine is new and they are keeping the price low to attract customers
in the area. I know that Cummins has an excellent reputation for
truck engines but I know nothing whatever about their marine
    reputation. Anyone have any thoughts?

Also...if I go ahead with this, would anyone be interested in the
    old engine?

Now I've no personal experience, but if it helps you I've NEVER
heard anyone complain about a Cummins engine. They are quite popular
    over here too.

Last Cummins I saw was being rebuilt for the second time after 10,000
hours on a 40' lobster boat...total of over 22,000 hours on the
    block and major innards.

I may be interested in your Westerbeke. Let's talk.
