977.0. "Water Pump Trouble" by WILVAX::LANE () Mon Sep 12 1988 13:19

    MY WATER PUMP JUST STOPPED WORKING !

    IT WAS INSTALLED AS A REBUILT, ONE YEAR AGO. IT FUNCTIONED
    PERFECTLY THROUGH THE SUMMER. LAST WEEKEND, AFTER BEING IDLE FOR
    ABOUT THREE WEEKS, IT STOPPED PUMPING. I DISASSEMBLED IT AND ALL
    LOOKS FINE. DRIVE BELT IS NEW AND TIGHT. I TESTED BY PUTTING
    INLET HOSE IN A BUCKET OF WATER. IT STILL WOULDN'T PUMP SO A CLOGGED
    INLET CAN'T BE THE PROBLEM.

    IS PRIMING SOMETIMES REQUIRED ? IF SO, HOW ?

    DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ?

    THANKS,

    RICK

    You did not mention what make or model of pump you have...

977.2I THINK IT'S . . . WILVAX::LANEMon Sep 12 1988 17:4912
    SORRY I CAN'T BE MORE SPECIFIC BUT . . .

    I THINK IT'S A JABSCO. IT'S PUMPING RAW WATER TO A SINGLE CYLINDER
    WESTERBEKE (PETTER) DIESEL. IT'S BELT DRIVEN, IMPELLER IS ABOUT 2" IN
    DIAMETER OR LESS, HAS 1/4" I.D. INLET AND OUTLET, AND IS WHAT I CALL A
    "STANDARD" PUMP. IT'S NOT ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT AS ORIGINAL WAS INTEGRAL
    TO THE TRANSMISSION.

    THANKS.

    Might not be the pump. Might be a blockage somewhere upstream from
    the pump. Take the outlet hose off and turn the engine on. Be
    prepared to get wet. If you get drenched then the pump is fine
    and you have to look elsewhere. We had a similar problem and it
    turned out to be a whole lot of eelgrass in the outlet hose. Jabsco
    pumps are pretty hard to break.

Make sure the intake hoses are tightened securely as the pump will suck
air otherwise.

    I would disconnect the output and again put the input into a bucket.
     you can run the engine for a couple of minutes without any damage.
     If the pump pumps then you know that there is blockage in the output
    line (but if this was true, you would probable lose some of the
    blades of the impeller). If the pump dosen't pump then it must
    be the impeller or the hose.

    hope you find it,

977.6Is it REALLY turning?RAINBO::BURRThu Sep 15 1988 18:387
    The impellor on some Jabsco pumps are attatched to the shaft with
    a set screw rather than a flattened portion of the shaft. Check
    that the impellor is in fact turning by removing the cover, releasing
    compression on the engine and turning over the engine. Is the impellor
    actually turning or just the drive belt?

    Check your seawater strainer. I cleaned mine once and didn't tighten
    the cover wing nuts down snug enough. It allowed air into the system.
