| Conners won by 18 plus minutes. The N.Z. team complained that Conners
did not race to his potential and they would have had more respect
for Conners had he won by 1 to 1 1/2 hours that he should have had
he raced a full out race. At the start the winds were light (5-7
knots) with very smove seas. The start had very little starting
tactics - I thought that the N.Z. boat would drive for the upwind
position, but didn't. About 30 to 45 minutes into the race the
N.Z. started a tacking duel and went thru about 20 or so tacks.
Conner was able to cover and not lose any time. The comment was
that everyone was surprised at how fast the cat was able to tack.
The winds picked up to 9 knots later. The race was a waste of time
nad very boring. Conners not only held back (never was there a
hul out of the water) but you could see the jib lufting many times.
There was just not much action at all.

| Conners won by 20 minutes in race 2 the series is over. The press
conference has yet to take place. If Mr Fay is to be believed it is
off the court. With the american legal system this could drag on for
years if the two parties want to keep appealing the decision (lets hope
not). Now that the freak show is over I hope that they can agree on a
boat type and a date.

| Perhaps if Connors was now to have some match racing with DeSavary's
boat not for the cup but simply high tec vs hi tec we could start
another cup for these types of designs ie a free for all ......

Yeah! We could have a "no holds barred" type race, animate it, and put
it on Saturday morning with the rest of the children's shows. Call it
the Wacky Sailboat Races, or something like that. The kids would LOVE
it. (I could see it now ... "Trim that sheet Snideley, tighten up the
foreguy Muttley, nyahahah)...

| About 10 years ago, the bicycle world was in a similar bind.
Regulations kept advanced designs from racing. The typical buyer
would only buy what won at the races. Because of this, the IHPVA
(International Human Powered Vehicle Assn.) was formed, with land,
air and water divisions (but most of the activity is in the land
div.). Perhaps someday we will see bikes racing in two divisions:
unlimited and Classic. Perhaps the sailing world could use an
IHPVA? - Chris (a recumbent rider)

| There was more action in the press conference after the second race
than in the race itself. Marshall(?), the designer of stars$stripes
called the N.Z. boat a "dog" adt Farr called Marshall a liar. Conners
got into ther act of tewlling Farr to get off the stage etc....this
whole act was soooo bad that on the evening the station I watched
had a commentary on how poorly Conners acted. They asls commented
on how well they (the newspeople) were treated by the N.Z. group
when the visited their compound prior to the race and how poorly
they were treated by the stars$strips group. I had a chance to
visit both areas a couple weeke before the race and i can attest
to this.

|
According to the 10/29 Boston Globe, the cup challanger New Zealand
will tour several New England states the week of 10/31. The schedule,
from memory, is:
New York City thru Tuesday 11/2
Norwalk Conn Wednesday 11/3
Newport RI Thursday 11/3
Boston Ma Friday 11/4 for four days
The Boston location wasn't mentioned but it will probably be the
Charlestown Navy Yard where Courageous is kept.

| Re: .8
These dates didn't match the ones published down here. Since there
was number listed for further info I just called and was given
the following.
New York (Brooklyn) Boat in process of leaving today (10-31)
Newport 11-02
Boston 11-04, 05, 06, 07
Baltimore 11-11, 12, 13
Annapolis 11-15, 16
Alexandria 11-18, 19, 20
Philadelphia 11-23, 24, 25
The person I talked to knew nothing about Norwalk. He did say that
on the travel days (i.e. 11-03, 11-08, 11-09, 11-10, etc) that the
boat MAY visit various harbors between major stops but arrangements
to allow boarding couldn't be predicted.

of going but really do not want to wander around the waterfront looking
for it.

| Try this number: 212-344-5454
If it works, it is most likely the NZ Council of Tourism in NY and
they should know.
If it doesn't then it was probably a temporary number connected
to the boat when it was in Brooklyn.

974.12 | It's on Long Wharf | MILVAX::HO | | Fri Nov 04 1988 13:46 | 15 |
|
New Zealand and crew (some of them anyway) are supposed to be at
Boston's Long Wharf 11/4 through 11/7.
Long Wharf is between the Aquarium and the Marriot Hotel on Atlantic
Ave.
Unfortunately, the boat will not be rigged for sailing. It's being
transported by barge and will remain on it for the duration of its
stay.
Hours will be 9:30 to 6:00. Admission is free.
