I am planning a bareboat charter vacation in the Virgin Islands
for 3 couples and would appreciate input regarding boats. I am
considering a Morgan 41 sloop (Catalina), Benetau 43 and Gulfstar
44. Any thoughts on the comfort and performance (the former is
more important on a vacation) of these options would be appreciated.

The best vacation ever! As far as relative merits of the boats,
it depends on what you consider worthwhile in a boat.
For performance, I'd rate them in the following decending order:
Benetau
Morgan
Gulfstar (could be second depending on rig and the sails'
condition.)
For sailing comfort, I'd rate them:
Morgan
Gulfstar
Benetau
For interior layout and privacy (a must with 3 couples):
Gulfstar
Morgan
Benetau
My recommendation is to make your choise on the equipment available
with each boat (windsurfer, etc), the relative age of each boat
and it's equipment, and the outfit that you are chartering from.
It has been my experience that the more complicated and aged the
boat, the more hassles you'll have with gear breakdowns during your
vacation.
Good luck and enjoy!

| 964.2 | Toss-up - Morgan vs Benetau | EJMVII::PASCUCCI | Wed Aug 31 1988 14:33 | 24 | |
I chartered a Benetau 43 (Moorings) in Feburary 87. Everything
on the boat worked. It was an easy boat to handle, both under power
and sail. The layout worked fine for us (2 couples). We enjoyed
it so much we will be returning this coming February. The boat
was ideal for two couples. Each had their own cabin with head.
Three couples can present a problem as one couple will be occupying
the salon and will have to keep their belongings more neatly stowed
than they may what. Also a head will have to be shared.
I have also chartered a Morgan 41 in Chesapeake Bay. The Morgan 41
had more interior space and was quite nice. It was a dog to sail
but I was also in Chesapeake Bay not the trade winds of the BVIs.
Tankage (water primarily) is important in the BVIs. Both the Morgan
and the Benetau carried 250 gallons of water which was more than
adaquate for us. If i were looking at both of these boats in the
BVIs I would go with the best deal ($) or the charter company that
gives you the greatest feeling of security.
Have a great vacation

I ferried a Glufstar 41 or 42 from Abaco's to Miami several
years ago...it was awfully slow ( but not overly stable)
If 3 couples are going on a 44 you better be good friends,
and not too modest. The Gulfstar was not overly well
ventilated below decks, which made it fairly hot at night.
Also, the galley was minimal. This may have been a function
of the particular ship.
