920.0. "Yanmar question" by OURVAX::NICOLAZZO (Better living through chemistry) Thu Jul 21 1988 16:21

     I have a Yanmar 15 H.P. (2YGM or something like that) on my Watkins
    27. If i haven't started the engine in a week or so, a warning light,
    "WATERPROOF" goes on. I can't find in the owners manual what
    this indicator means. If i let the engine warm up, shut it off,
    and restart it, the light goes out. Does anyone have any guess what
    "WATERPROOF" might mean?

     If i run the engine any more frequently than once a week the light
    does not go on. The engine is not fresh water cooled and when the
    light is on, water is comming out of the outlet in the stern. The
    engine does not overheat so don't think it has anything to do with
    the cooling system.

    If you live in the Boston area, call Mack Boring (617-848-9300).
     They are located in Braintree and have been most helpful with
    questions on the Yanmar.

920.2maybe WATER PRESSURE?CADSYS::SCHUMANNFri Jul 22 1988 11:1219
> Does anyone have any guess what "WATERPROOF" might mean?

Are you sure that's not "WATERPRESS"?. To figure out what
this light means, follow its wire back to its sensor. The position of the
sensor on the engine should give you a hint as to what it measures.

If it measures water pressure (to verify coolant flow), and the coolant
is flowing, but the warning light is on, it probably means a defective
sensor. From your symptoms, it could be that the switch in the pressure
sensor may be a bit sticky and/or corroded. The second time you start the
engine, there will immediately be coolant and pressure, and the vibration
of startup may be enough to unjam the switch. It is also possible that
the pressure and flow are marginal, due a failing water pump or some other
problem. Since engines are expensive, it would be wise to verify that the
coolant flow is adequate, and to replace the sensor if it is defective.

920.3You have a saildrive ?HAEXLI::PMAIERMon Jul 25 1988 05:096
    Do you have a saildrive? If yes,then "waterproof " means there is
    water between the two seals of the "leg".

920.4update...OURVAX::NICOLAZZOBetter living through chemistryWed Aug 17 1988 10:3714
    RE .1 I called Mack Boring. They claimed there is no such indicator
    (I said "yes there is", they said "no there isn't", I said "yes
    there is".......)

    RE .2 The problem finally reaccured so i could double check this.
    The indicator definatly says WATERPROOF.

    RE .3 I don't think it's a saildrive. It's just a shaft with a prop
    on the end. Isn't a saildrive a unit that looks like the lower half
    of an outboard?

      I guess this weekend I'll trace the wire to the engine and see
    if that tells me anything.

920.5info about panel and wire?CASV05::THOMAS_Eshort!!Wed Aug 17 1988 11:198
    I have the Yanmar Technical manual and may be able to help.

    What type control panel do you have? With or wothout the tach?
    Which indicator light is coming on? I.E., the Nth from port or stbd.
    Do you recall the color of the wire?

    Ed

920.6As best as i remember...OURVAX::NICOLAZZOBetter living through chemistryWed Aug 17 1988 12:1616
     It is the control panel WITH the Tach. The panel is mounted on
    the port side so it looks like this;

           <--------stern                       bow---------->

        X      X      X       ENGINE TEMP     WATERPROOF    CHARGE
        (don't know what
         these light are)

      I think that's the sequence of the lights. I'll check it this
    weekend to be sure. I don't know what color the wire is, I'll check
    that also this weekend.

      Thanks much.

920.7Marblehead YANMAR dealerYACHTS::CORKUMI'd rather be sailing....Wed Aug 17 1988 14:0616

Hello Rich,

I too have a Yanmar 2GM and I'll check my panel (with tach.) as well.

There's also a YANMAR dealer in Marblehead, Rich Phelan (Marine Power Systems
639-2248). He's located next Marblehead Trading's yard on Cliff st.
(This used to be where Bob Cloutman was located and I believe there's a small
yacht club there as well). He's a one-man operation but does good work.

I recently had him upgrade my salt water cooled engine to fresh water cooled.

920.8Ahhh, the answerOURVAX::NICOLAZZOBetter living through chemistryWed Aug 17 1988 16:4211
     Well i called Marine Power Systems. They said that the light is
    for a saildrive and is an indicator for what .3 had explained. They
    also said that the wiring harness for all the engines are the same
    so although i don't have a saidrive the wiring is there and it must
    have shorted out on something.

     Guess it's time to go crawling around the engine compartment, what
    fun:-)

       Thanks all

    I checked the technical manual and from right to left it shows;
    charge, oil pressure and water temperature.

    re .9

    Shoddywork on my part!! sorry. :-(

    Re-examination of the manual shows the waterproof light as the 4th from
    the right(as you face it). There is no discussion of the indicator in
    the text of the manual about the waterproof indicator. Presumably it
    would be discussed in the manual that came with the Saildrive?
