918.0. "Solos, Contenders, OKs?" by CHEFS::SHEPHERDJ () Thu Jul 21 1988 10:21

I'm thinking of doing some single-handed racing in the SUK. Do any
contributors to this notes file have a view on appropriate racing
    dinghy classes.

I have sailed lasers and I'm not particularly impressed - I'm looking
more for a boat than a plank. Any views on the Solo, Contender,
    OK ?

    ...Jon

I know that I am 6 months out of date.... but here is some
    information...

SOLO - Good BOAT (rather than a plank!). Slower than the OK, LASER
etc. Available in wood or glass-fibre or home built. Strict one-design.
Very comfortable to sail, tends not to be sailed by the 15-25 year
old super-fits. Enough space to take others in it if required. Numbers
are up to about 3700 - UK only. (About 5 or 6 sailed regularly at
    Burghfiled, just outside Reading, UK).

OK - Another boat. Space to get one person in only. Often sailed
by people wearing bicycle type crash helmets! - the boom is low,
VERY low. Good, cheap second hand buy. BUT the mast can be a problem,
leading to a slow boat, on older ones. Tends to be sailed by people
a little fitter and tougher than SOLO sailors. Wood or glass fibre
    - not many home built.

CONTENDER - a flyer!! - trapeze on a single hander - Glass fibre only.
Super fit swimmers only need apply!
