| One of the boats at my marina (a Moody 33) had a plastic winch on
the mast for mainsail reefing.
I recall that it was a real turkey. It had not only a plastic
drum, but there were no real bearings - some kind of plastic or
nylon sleeve over the post. Anyway it seized up the first season
and was replaced by the boat manufacturer with a proper bronze
winch.

| If the MOODY 33 had a plastic winch it must have been owner purchased
and installed.......MOODY's tend to fit Lewmar winches that in the
UK are all alloy. In my chadlers list I can find no reference to
plastic winches, is this a North American aberation ? My own MOODY
has Lewmars which are superb.

I suspect they're talking about the Barient 10P winches. See notes
895 and 866 (??, winch accident). Doesn't look like they're all
that reliable.

910.4 | Plastic drums OK | AYOU17::NAYLOR | Purring on all 12 cylinders | Thu Jul 21 1988 05:45 | 4 |
| My own 20 footer is fitted with plastic DRUMS but the rest is
all stainless. Only problem is the lack of friction when wet compared
to all metal, but solved by putting another turn on!
