897.0. "osmosis....real life" by HAEXLI::PMAIER () Mon Jul 11 1988 12:13

My boat has osmosis.

I discovered it yesterday. The waterline looks real bad.I have not checked
the underwater part yet.

I have some questions:

Anybody out there with practical experience ?
Does it make a difference if I let it repair now during the season
or wait for winter ? Does it get worse during one summer ?
How long does it take to dry ? (the books say a few weeks)
Any practical experience with Gelshield from International ?

Just wondering, why I have not seen the blistering earlier.
I'm just back from holiday in the mediteranien sea.Mayby the change from
sweet to salt to sweet water has started it so fast.I'm shure, 5 weeks ago
everything was still fine.

Unfortunately, I do have practical experience with blisters. I suggest you look
at note 664, although I don't recall anyone commenting on Gelshield.

Blistering is often worst along the waterline, but I would check lower down.
If it's bad, I would opt for pulling the boat and fixing asap, even if it
meant losing the rest of the season. More bad news is that drying and
repairing is not practical during hot, humid summer weather.

    Its repaired now.

First the hull got sandblastet. This removed the antifouling and the
primer and some of the gelcoat. Then the gelcoat was removed completely
    by hand with a sander.
Then they let the boat dry in the open for approx. 2 mounth. Then the
boat was moved for 1 week inside the yard to warm up.Then 1 application
of Gelshield.Gelshield is an epoxie which cures with low temperatures.
Then 2 applications of epoxiefiller to replace the gelcoat. Then two
applications of Gelshield, primer and last the antifouling. Cost: 8%
of new boat all including. (unstepping/stepping of mast etc..)
