895.0. "Problem - Barient 10P" by HEYDEN::DONOHUE () Sun Jul 10 1988 22:37

    I am having a problem with A Barient 10P winch. I have had this
    same problem before on another boat. The drum shows a great reluctance
    to turn on the center spindle. I have taken the winch appart, cleaned
    it and greased it. The problem is somewhat dimminished but still
    persists. On the other boat that I had, the problem disappeared
    after awhile.

    Barient had nothing to offer other than clean and grease.

    Any thoughts?

        John

895.1GRAPHITE WORKS OKAYCSSE::COUTUREAbandon shoreMon Jul 11 1988 14:2013
    I THINK I HAD THOSE AT ONE TIME. IF THOSE ARE THE ONES WITH THE
    SPINDLES MADE OUT OF SOME SORT OF BLACK PLASTIC MATERIAL, I HAD
    THE SAME PROBLEM. THE LUBRIPLATE WOULD JUST BIND UP THE WINCHES
    AFTER AWHILE. I SOULD UP TAKING EMORY PAPER TO THE SPINDLE AND
    THE INSIDE OF THE DRUM (AFTER I CLEANED OUT ALL OF THE OLD GREASE)
    AND THEN I LUBRICATED WITH GRAPHITE. OF COURSE THE PAWLS STILL
    NEEDED GREASE, BUT I NO LONGER HAD BINDING PROBLEMS AFTER THAT.

    ONE NOTE OF CAUTION, I COVERED THE WINCHES WHEN NOT IN USE, AND
    IF I EVER GOT POOPED OR THE WINCHES WERE REALLY DRENCHED, I
    HAD TO DISASSEMBLE, DRY THEM OFF, AND RE GRAPHITE. CAN I INTEREST
    YOU IN SOME LEWMARS?
