878.0. "RI to Norfolk?" by P928S4::MCBRIDE () Tue Jun 28 1988 12:30

I have been asked to join a friend on a delivery cruise from Tiverton
RI to Norfolk VA mid August. From the last few notes this seems to
be a popular direction to head in at this time. They plan on cruising
the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, part of the ICW as well as the
Chesapeake. Unfortunately I have to save my vacation for our two week
VI charter in October so I can only go as far as Norfolk. We will be
going around LI and straight to Norfolk without any planned stops.
Can anyone give me an idea how long this should take? I would like a
rough idea of the number of vacation days this may eat up. The boat
is a 1969 Salar 40, heavy displacement pilot house sloop. Not very
swift but certainly sure. Any recommendations on transient facilities
in the Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton Roads area would be appreciated
also. This will be my first "offshore" passage and I am really
    looking forward to it.

    Newport, RI to Norfolk, VA = 350km = 3 days @ 5kts

    (your milage may vary)

Shouldn't that be miles, not km? We just did it, and I know it was more
than ~225 miles. ;-).

Also, given the vagaries of August weather and the presumed efficiency of
the boat, think more in terms of 5 days unless you plan to motor in calm
or light weather. Then you can feel great if it only takes three days!

Whoops! Got my knots and nautical miles tied up in the keyboard.
    That should be 350nm.

And yes, I was assuming that they'd motor thru the calms.

Yes we will motor through the calms because even thought the owners
have more time to spend they wish to get to where they are going
to cruise as soon as possible. Thanks for the info. If all goes
well maybe I will have a trip report worth some interest.
