871.0. "Somewhere quiet near Reading?" by RDGENG::KEDMUNDS ($ no !fm2r, no comment) Thu Jun 16 1988 06:13

    	Couldn't find anything specifically on Reading, England, so...

    	I have a little dinghy I want to "play" with. I know a little,
    and only a little, about sailing, but I want to have a go by myself
    first. Where can I take it, within reasonable distance of Reading,
    pay (a little) money, and be left to my own devices for a while?
    Obviously I don't want to get in the way of people racing, etc...

    	Grateful for ideas..

    	Keith

    Keith , there are any number of clubs on the Thames plus around
    the gravel pits ie Burghfield etc. If you give the RYA Royal Yachting
    Association a call they will give you a list of clubs and who runs
    RYA courses. If you want to go further afield Chichester Harbour
    is a good place. Chichester Yacht Club has a very active dinghy
    section. You can contact the RYA on 0703-629962.

871.2Learn to sail safelyWARDER::COLLINSJonathan COLLINS @OLO, Warrington, EnglandMon Jun 20 1988 08:2330
    Keith,
    I took up Dinghy sailing last year and on the advice of experts
    did an intensive 1 week Learn to Sail course (RYA Approved). These
    are run all over the place. I did mine by arranging an extra weeks
    holiday in South Wales (thus keeping wife and kids happy on the
    Beach whilst I did the course!). I would highly recommend this
    method of learning as it covers safety as well as basic sailing.
    Its a bit like learning to drive a car - I have passed the test
    and now I can really learn to sail.

    Give me a call on 830-2301 if you want more info.

    I have now bought a GP14 and enjoy sailing a lot.
