859.0. "Manhattan Yacht Club - J-24's" by BMT::PLAUT (Robert Plaut (NY) dtn 352-2403) Tue Jun 07 1988 11:42
For those Manhattanites interested in sailing but unwilling to tolerate
the required travel and expense to rent boats on Long Island, Conn.
or New Jersey, there is an alternative.
The Manhattan Yacht Club maintains 12 J-24's that are docked at
the South Street Seaport (just south of the Brooklyn Bridge). The
club dock is between two 100 year old tall ships (the Peking and
the Wavertree), the boats have radios (the club monitors channel
69), two jibs, a main sail, a spinnaker, all necessary sailing and
saftey gear, and outboard motors. A full time dock crew maintains
the fleet, there is a very active racing program for members and
corporate clubs (they have their own, logo sails). The committee
boat is a 1951 48 foot DCFB upon which members and guests can watch
the races when they're not sailing.
The costs are $800 per year for full membership with a one time
initiation fee of $1000. Members must also become sustaining members
of the South Street Seaport museum ($100 per year, tax deductable),
an aspect that carries its own separate benefits.
Based on some of the notes in this conference, these costs are rather
reasonable for the right to sail one year old J-24's from a
conveniently located dock. The sailing year is from May to Oct.
There is also a frost bite racing season that seems to attract more people
than one would expect.
