Help, my depth meter does not work. I have a signet 1000
knot/log/depth meter. The knot and log meter work fine. However
the depth shows 0.00. The two thing I did or did not do is;
1. put bottom paint on transducer. I did clean it off right away
but there still may have been a film left on the transducer.
2. Manual says to wet transducer with soapy water 24-48 hours before
puting boat in water. I did not do it last year (meter worked fine)
and I did not do it this year (meter does not work).
The question is with this limited information, whats broke? Can
it be fixed?
Bottom line is that I'll call the company, but I was just wondering
if anyone can hazard a guess as to whats wrong?

Tom sounds like operator error to me. What do you need aknot meter

How did you clean it? Is the bottom surface of the transducer
smooth, or did it get roughed up in the cleaning process? I don't
have the same unit as you, but the booklet for mine says to keep
the surface as smooth as possible. Don't know how it would affect
the reading.
One occasional problem I have with mine, is that due to the
position that I mounted it, it will at times just lift out of the
water a bit. This causes the reading to drop to zero briefly until
the transducer is submerged again. If your painting (or cleaning)
of the unit is somehow preventing the transducer from "feeling"
the water, it will register zero.
One last thing. My boat bottom was spray-painted, and they covered
the transducer as well. The unit still works fine. In fact, I don't
see why a _thin_ coating of paint would cause problems. (And they
do sell transducer paints, so it can't be all that bad.)

Is this the square model? I think my father's sail boat has the
same model. We did get a little paint on it while painting but
quickly wipped it off. We also did not wet the transducer before
it hit the water. It works fine. The previous owner did have some
problems with it but I forget what the specifics were.
