834.0. "Telltales" by AKOV13::GYOUNG () Fri May 13 1988 14:58

I'm a newcomer both to the sport and this conference. I began
sailing last year, after powerboating most of my life. I'm
currently taking a Basic Sailing course at the Boston Sailing
    Center ...... and having a blast !!

I own a 14' Holder which I keep in N.H. and plan to use this summer
on Winnipesaukee and Ossippee ...... a neighbor and I are also
involved in a 33' Hunter on Narragansett Bay. You can see that
    I'm bitten .......

My question for today is around adding telltales to a sail. The
Holder has telltales on the shrouds, but I've come to realize through
the sailing course that telltales on the jib and main are very
    important also.

Is it simple to put telltales on the sails ?? What type of
adhesive should be used ?? Where is the best location and how
    do you determine ???

James Bliss sells a little package of ribbon teltales and round
adhesive patchs for about $5. Probably the greatest markup sale in
marine history, these ribbons cant be worth more than $.02 each.

Anyway, they work fine. I always just used sail repair tape and
    a bit of yarn.

Read this month's Cruising World. There's a whole article on
    telltale placement.

The Davis sail telltails is what was referred to in .1

I have used them for several years where the sailmaker did not provide
telltales. They are probably overpriced, but I dont remember paying
more than a couple bucks for a package. The package contains about
a dozen telltales and patches (self adhesive).

For placement on the jib, try about one foot aft of the leading
edge approximately 1/2 way up the sail. Offset the port and starboard
telltales so that it's possible to tell which is which. On a larger
jib additional telltales above and below the middle one are useful
for determining the "break" (jib lead placement to accomodate wind
    shear).

On the main, one at the leach end of the top batten is probably
    adequate.

Cassette recording tape flies better in light air than yarn. When
fastening telltales, sticky dacron sail repair material works real
well. Vinyl tape is almost as good. Duct tape and cloth backed
tapes have an adhesive that deteriorates quickly and leaves a messy
    residue.

An additional advantage of recording tape is that it does not absorb water
and sog down or stick to anything.

834.6Don't forget those telltale windows!!AKOV11::KALINOWSKITue Jun 14 1988 20:138
If you really want to burn some money, get a set of telltale
windows installed. Basicly, they cut out a triangle from your
sail, sew in a clear plastic section, and then apply a set
    of win-tales.

all this for only $10 a set. Being the show-off that I am, I have
4 sets of them. 8>) Just contact your local overworked sailmaker.
