830.0. "Longevity of manual bilge pumps" by BTO::JPETERS (John Peters, DTN 266-4391) Tue May 10 1988 10:35

    I rebuilt my Guzzler "500" pump last spring. This spring, the
    diaphragm is seriously checked.

    What are your experiences with longevity of manual bilge pumps?

    My whale "gusher" (or something like that) is about 18 years old.
    Works fine. No obvious deterioration. The only problem is that
    it gets clogged easily.

		We had to rebuild out "gusher" every 10 years or so.

		Look for things in your bilge that may destroy rubber,

		such as hard chemicals, and harsh cleaners. Another worry

		is if your pump is trying to push sharp objects through it.

830.3No chemicals or sharp objects, but...BTO::JPETERSJohn Peters, DTN 266-4391Tue Jun 14 1988 12:046
    The pump referred to in .0 had not even been used once. It's a
    backup to an electric. It had, however, been in direct sunlight,
    and the diaphragm was cracked and checked where it bends sharply.

830.4I Rebuilt mine tooNSSG::BUDZINSKIThu Jun 16 1988 13:297
    I rebuilt my Guzzler 500 this Spring. The previous owner hadn't
    even hooked it up and when I tried to, it didn't work. All the
    parts, diaphram and valves looked OK but the valves must have been
    too stiff to work. Mine's not in sunlight so we'll see how it lasts.
