816.0. "Folding Bicycles?" by DSSDEV::RUDY () Thu Apr 28 1988 09:20

I have seen a broad range of folding bicycles in the marine
catalogs. They cost anywhere from $120 from Defender to $400
for a Stida (unique style frame for sure).

Does anyone have any experience with these and recommendations. Our
main use is to carry aboard when we go cruising to have some mechanical
    transport for doing errads etc.

    			Thanks,
                               Jeff

re .0	Salt air or fresh ?

"Regular" bicycle components will rust/deteriorate/oxidize very
quickly in salt air. There are lots of aluminium alloy components on
most bicycles and they are NOT salt tolerant alloys.
You probably have a choice of the two extremes, salt hardy and very
expensive, or cheap and throw away.

I carry two Univega Alpina Uno mountian bikes. They hold up well
in the salt water environment. By moving the handle-bars parallel
with the frame of the bike, they store in my quarter-berth. Chips
in the paint are the spots where rust attacks, but its nothing a
little sandpaper and paint can't fix.

With a bike and a backpack your set, but getting the bike to shore is
    another trick!

816.3A BIKE THAT YOU CAN GET IN THE DINGHYCHARON::HOLZERWed May 04 1988 18:389
I bought a Bridgestone "Picnica" about 3 years ago. It folds
readily, is single speed and has been quite reliable. Its great
for your intended purpose, but I have done 10 mile rides on it for
fun. The marine enviornment has not seemed to affect it adversely
except for one or two tiny rust spots. It is small enought to take
ashore in the Avon. In short, it has been a joy and only surpassed
by my Loran in terms of great gadgets to have around.

There's a bike called Dahon Folder (made somewhere down California
	ways) that's really nice.

It come's in all stainless steel (weight about 25 lbs I guess),
	folds into something like 20 ' * 20' * 10', unfolds in about
15 seconds flat and has three gears. I've used two for a summer
	now, no rust showing!

Price here in Finland was about the quiv of $ 300+, but sofar have
	seemed like money well spent.
