760.0. "Wave operated bilge pump" by SHIVER::JPETERS (John Peters, DTN 266-4391) Mon Mar 14 1988 14:56

"Wooden Boat" magazine had an ad for a float-operated bilge pump.
You hang the device over the side, and wave action raises and lowers
a float, which pumps the bilges.

The Smart Automatic Boat Pump, is manufactured in Norway, and the
distributor states that it has been used for years in Scandanavian
countries and England. Asking price is $157.50, which seems steep
    for a simple device.

Has anyone bought or used this pump? If so, does it work well?
How about those of you in Great Britain and Europe, how much does
    this cost over there?
    				Thanks, John

760.1Smart Pump wave actuated bilge pumpCHRCHL::GERMAINImprovise! Adapt! Overcome!Mon Oct 07 1991 13:1517
I recently bought and installed the neatest product I've seen in a
long time. It's called the Smart Pump, and it is sold by Perkins in
Mattapoisett, Ma. The pump was designed in Norway.

It is a wave actuated bilge pump. It sits over the side, or astern
(wherever there is sufficient overhang), and a tube runs from the pump
to your bilge. It's used while moored or anchored. wave action moves a
9" (approx) diameter float which moves the pump.

I figured you would need serious wave action for this thing to be
useful. But I installed it last saturday. 1 to 2 inch ripples were
sufficient to get the pump action going. I was amazed. This is a great
main bilge pump - though I still have my Rule 2000 put in automatic.

The unit costs $99.00. And I highly recommend it.
