744.0. "Compac 27 Experience Request" by THEPOD::PEASE_DAVE (I said Id have to think about it) Wed Feb 10 1988 20:33

	We currently have a COMPAC 16 that we are going to put on the
coast of Maine at the mouth of the Sheepscot this year. This is an
interim solution between lake sailing, and trading up to something that we can
cruise further downeast with.
	We like the interior and layout of the COMPAC 27', and it has
the basic requirements like desiel. I'd like any feedback from
any owners or from any experience you've had with the 27 or even the
19, since its bigger. I'm trying to get a feel of COMPAC's ability
to keep 16' quality in their larger models.

	Thanks,
	Dave & Sue

744.1< I looked at the 27, I own a 19>DFCON1::FRENCHWed Feb 10 1988 23:3224
    I bought a COM PAC 16 in 84, and moved up to a COM pac 19 in Aug
    of 85, which we still own. We principally lake sail on Winnipesaukee
    (I just signed the contract for our 5th season. The mooring was
    the same price as last year - a miracle!)

    The only reason we moved up was to sleep the 4 of us.

    The 19 is all of the boat that the 16 is. Very well built. 40%
    ballast ratio (800lbs of ballast). We pushed the 19 (Mark II which
    is really 20' with the bowsprit) pretty hard in heavy winds this
    year. It is a very safe and stable boat.

    We climbed around on a 27 at Fernalds (Newburyport Ma) in the fall.
    Very nice, but at $43,000, its anawful lot more than the under
    10K you should be able to get a used 19 for. Give me a call
    dtn 381-0778 if you want more details about our experiences with
    the 19.

    p.s. - It feels MUCH bigger in volume and in saling inertia than
    the 16.

744.2trailerable??CSSE32::NEWBERRYHal NewberryThu Feb 11 1988 14:062
    Sounds like an interesting design, are the 16 or 19 trailerable??

744.3The 19, 19 & 23 are trailerableDFCON1::FRENCHThu Feb 11 1988 16:548
    The 16, at 1100 lbs plus trailer is very trailerable.
    The 19 and 23 are also. At 2000 lbs + trailer for the 19, one needs
    a class 2 hitch and a tow vehicle that is a little bigger than my
    Isuzu Trooper (1.9 l. engine).

744.4Compac 16 behind a Corolla...TLE::PEARLLarry Pearl (TLE::PEARL) DTN: 381-2254Thu Feb 18 1988 12:5432

The Compac 16 at 1100 lbs + trailer + motor + misc baggage is quite
trailerable with all but the smallest compact cars. We made a
trip to Mt. Desert Island Maine a few summers ago with a '77 Toyota
wagon with 1.6 ltr engine. Although technically overloaded and
certainly not very safe in a panic stop it can be done without too
much trouble. Just be careful and plan to go very slowly.....up
some of the longer hills.

This past summer, with a somewhat newer '82 Corolla wagon with a 1.8
ltr engine we made the trip (with extra gear because of a baby) up
to Boothbay with no trouble whatsoever.

Smaller cars such as the Honda Civic or Ford Escort are probably
not recommened. The wagon may also help since it probably has a
suspension designed for larger loads than the sedans.

One of our reasons for choosing this boat was its trailerability
and we've had a blast taking it with us.

Its also an extremely comfortable and safe boat and can handle
most of the conditions in the bays of Maine.

P.S One tip - as with any trailering the balance of the boat (and
gear) on the trailer is extremely important for stability. Although
it was set up correctly balanced from the factory trailering with
the motor on the back threw the balance off enough to make the
it unstable. So put the motor in the car or store forward in the
hull.

744.5Price for a slightly used Compac 16/3?EMMFG::THOMSThu Aug 12 1993 09:368

    My father is considering selling his Compac 16/3. The boat is in
    excellent condition and has seen little use. The boat will go with
    a small Johnson outboard and galvanized trailer. What is a fair
    asking price?

744.6My experiences w/ used Com-Pac 16sMASTR::FRENCHBill French 381-1859Thu Aug 12 1993 09:5419
    What year is it, what did he pay for it and what is the current selling
    price of the same/equivalent setup?

    In the spring of 1984 I bought a straight 1981 Com-Pac 16 (in excellent
    condition) with trailer, from a yacht broker for $4400. (The motor was a
    separate transaction). I sold it in August of 1985 as a trade in towards
    a new Com-Pac 19-II (at a now defunct Com-Pac dealer) for $4200.

    Most Com-Pacs that I have seen advertised (w/ trailer) have been in the
    $3500-4500 range. A 5hp motor could be be in the range of $0 - $750
    depending on age and condition. Lower H.P. proportionaltly less.

    If it is quite new and in like-new condition I would probebly start
    at %80 of new price. How does that compare with the $ above?

    Bill

    Hope that helps.
744.7Nice entry boatEMMFG::THOMSThu Aug 12 1993 12:036
    I believe the Compac is a 1990 and I haven't asked what the original
    price was.
    My father is going the opposite way of most sailboat owners, going from
    large to small to no boat.
