A summary of Coast Guard Auxiliary activities completed during 1987 were released by W.J. Wallace, U.S. Coast Guard, Chief Director of Auxiliary. The following figures are averages for the entire national Auxiliary effort. On an average 1987 day, the Auxiliary Membership Taught boating safety to 516 youths. Taught multi-lesson courses to 298 adults. Examined 768 pleasure boats (voluntary, equipment and safety checks) Presented 26 civic lectures. Published 181 news stories. Performed 69 Coast Guard Operational Support missions. Conducted 72 Safety Patrols. Assisted 68 boaters. Assisted or saved $370,000 worth of property. Saved more than one boater's life. I thought some of you might be interested in how the Auxiliary did in 1988. Sorry, but the national totals are not yet available. The following performance data, for 1988, was released by the Vice Commodore of the First Northern District of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The First Northern District covers our New England area from the Canadian border to the western Rhode Island border. During 1988 the First Northern Auxiliarists: Conducted Public Education classes for 16,000 youth and adult students. This was accomplished by 991 Instructors during 8146 classroom hours. Provided 18,019 Courtesy Marine Examinations with 538 examiners. Produced 4410 printed and broadcast news or safety articles. Provided 4282 hours of Auxiliary member training to the existing membership and to 312 new members. Conducted Safety Patrols and other vessel or station operations for a total of 30,243 hours. During these missions 351 separate assists were performed and 11 boaters' lives were saved. Regards, Jerry |
