The time has come when the old rags have totally had it so I have
ordered a new main and a new 135% bi-radial roller furling genoa.
Because I have read the prices referenced in some of the other notes
on sails, I was very pleased at the prices quoted for the sails.
My boat is a 47' teak ketch with very tall sticks so my sails are
big....main - 368 sq. ft; genny - 539 sq. ft. When I was shopping
around, I talked with Hood, Doyle, North and Thurston before talking
with the people at Rockport (ME) Marine (an excellent yard recommended
to me by Giffy Full). The prices quoted to me by those establishments
ranged from $4300-3094 for the main (with Doyle being the highest)
and from $4160-2850 for the genny (again with Doyle being the highest).
Taylor Allen of Rockport Marine put me in touch with Bob Chace,
head of Bohndel's Sail loft, also of Rockport (phone 207-236-3549).
Bohndel's has been in business since before WWII and has, I discovered,
an excellent reputation. They measured my spars, suggested a 137%
roller-reefing bi-radial genoa with foam in the luff out of 7.1oz
warp oriented Dimension dacron (UV treated) for $1750.00 as well as
a new 8.7 oz Blade (Bainbridge) main with three sets of reefs for
$1950! Total cost $3700 or $460 less than the cost of the Doyle genoa
alone!
Bohndel's builds a lot of cruising sails for Maine sailors as well
as most of the sails for the flotilla of Schooners which operate
out of Camden and Rockland. They come very well recommended. I'll
let you all know next spring when we see how the sails work out.

We used to keep our boat at Rockport Marine, and the local builder (Penbo) supplied sails from Bohndell. I like them, and would go back again because of their attitude, but they did have to recut the main and mizzen on our Quoddy Pilot. The original cut was horrendous -- the sailing equivalent of square tires. The price still justified the end result, time and energy included. John. | |||||
| 727.2 | They're great! | RAINBO::BURR | Tue Jun 06 1989 12:09 | 9 | |
Its a year later than I expected owing to the boat being laid up for
major hull work, but I finally went sailing with the new Bohndell sails
last weekend. They are great! Both sails fit perfectly. The
difference in the ease of handling and power with the new sails is
dramatic. By all means, if you need sails, get in touch with Bob Chase
at Bohndells for a quote!

| 727.3 | Atlantic Sail Traders | MARINR::DARROW | The wind is music to my ears | Fri Mar 02 1990 15:52 | 59 |
Just got back from a week in the sun. I had oppotunity to stop in
and 'visit' with Wayne Stevens at Atlantic Sail Traders in
Sarasota, Florida. (Visit timed perfectly for the one and only
rainy day) You may have seen his adds in Cruising World, Small
Boat Journal, or Messing About in Boats. Wayne, like many who
have decided to make a living 'messing about in/around boats' is
interesting and a pleasure to talk to.
As noted in our intro in 7.10 we have recently purchased an
O'Day 222. Great shape but sail inventory limited to main and a
110 roller furling jib. Wayne just happened to have a used
spinnaker of the appropriate size for $125.00. Needless to say,
out sail inventory just increased by 50%.
Wayne tries to build up his iventory during the winter and
currently has in excess of 1300 sails with not too many
duplicates. I have a copy of his flyer, but will enter a
couple of excerpts here.
NEW AND USED SAILS
BUY - SELL - TRADE
Most sails in the Atlantic Sail Traders inventory are
new/unused surplus of bankruptcy stock. We also carry
used sails of all types and sizes.
CONDITION
The sails on our list are new/unused unless otherwise
noted. Sails are rated according to useful life - New,
Like new, Very good, and Useable. Purley cosmetic flaws
(Stains, dirt, color bleed, etc.) do not affect the
condition rating of a sail but are noted in sail
description and are adjusted for in price.
More details on buying, selling, ordering, payment, return
policy, alterations, roller furling-reefing conversions in flyer.
Call me, send me mail or write Wayne.

I have a color photo my son took showing part of the inventory.
Looks like the stock room of a rainbow builder, although a bit
heavy on the reds, yellows and blues.
For the readers of Small Boat Journal and Messing About in Boats,
I also stopped in and saw Mac at Feather Canoes. He builds the
Wee Lasie canoe. The 10 1/2 foot model weighs @ 20lbs and the 11
1/2 is @ 28lbs. Some day when our boat gets big enough, I would
like nothing better than to hang one of his cedar strip dinghies
off the stern. They are absolutely a delight to behold. And they
handle well besides. The Canoes run @ $100 a foot the dinghies @
$200 a foot.
