I AM CHARTERING OUT OF TORTOLLA ON DECEMBER 5 - 13. HAVE NEVER BEEN
TO THE BVI BEFORE, LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS ON WHERE TO VISIT, WHAT
TO SEE, AND MOST IMPORTANT - WHERE NOT TO GO.

I WILL BE SAILING AN ENDEVOUR 42', AND AM A CERTIFIED DIVER.
I APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS FROM THOSE THAT HAVE SAILED THERE,
I PROMISS TO SEND PICTURES TO THOSE THAT HELP THE MOST !

    Poke around in Notes 178, 375, 376, 397 and 429. there's quite a
    bit of stuff in these.

If the swell isn't too bad, and if you feel like launching your dinghy
in the surf, overnight at Cane Garden Bay and have dinner at Stanley's.
The food's solid, the beer's cold and the steel band is
    AAAAWWWWSSSSUUUMMMM!!!

Drake's Anchorage was kinda neat. The chocolate mousse at the
restaurant is world class and my snorkeling friends had a grest
time of the west end of the island.

    ENJOY!!!

689.2My VI favoritesHAMSTR::PACLThu Nov 12 1987 13:1314
Great diving to be had on the Rhone ("The Deep") wreck off Salt
Island. I thought Jost Van Dyke was fun (Sydney's Peace & Love
    - OK food, great crowd and dancing - Little Harbor is tight tho). For
my money, Virgin Gorda is the prettiest island - the Baths, although
the most touristy - are fun to snorkel around. Norman island -
great snorkelling, large schooner/restaurant was anchored in harbor
when I was there (86) and provided good company of other boaters.
Cooper Island offers one of the liveliest beach bars and very
good snorkeling (NW side) - ask for a unique drink called a
    "Painkiller".

I can go on and on - I envy you. Have you chartered elsewhere in
the Carib.? I'm trying to plan something for 1988.

689.3Can't help, sorry !NYOB::FOURNIERWed Nov 18 1987 15:438
The only other sailing I did in the VI was an off shore trip from
Nassau to St. Thomas. It was a wild trip, 3 days of pure hell and
3 days of great sailing. I was on a Mason 45 with a small family
that was working their way around the world.

Can't tell you much about the Islands, we just docked and got on
a plane, what a bummer that was ! Thanks for the help !

Without getting into a whole lot of specifics, here are few resources for
this information:

- Get a chart or map of the USVI/BVI area, and check through some of the
accounts posted in this file. They name good anchorages, and will
also give you an idea of what distances may be reasonable.

N.B.- A cardinal rule of relaxed chartering is always to plan a
shorter sail than you're sure you can do comfortably, rather than a
longer one. The latter situation will tire you more (it blows pretty
hard down there some days) and put you last into the anchorage, which
means in the least favorable spot (due to exposure, swell, depth, bottom,
   distance from shore, whatever.)

- Find some of the annual slew of chartering articles published each fall
in Cruising World or Sail magazines.

- Invest the bucks and buy Don Street's guide to cruising in the
Caribbean. It'll serve on this trip, and help you dream about others.

- Lastly, you certainly can arrive down there and just plain make up your
mind each day based upon wind, weather and energy. Many folks do just
   that.

689.6INFO NEEDED ON CHARTERING OUT OF TORTOLACONFG5::HUNTERSun Oct 27 1991 12:2011
I am putting together another trip to the Virgins for next April. I
have the found a company in Roadtown who drop their rates earlier than
most of the others (April 1st) and who seem to be the only ones who
charter the larger Nonsuch's (36'). Their name is Tropic Cat. Has any-
one heard of them (either good or bad?)

Also - any recommendations for an overnight stay in or near Roadtown
(preferably a small inn or guest house?) Any comments on Maria's?

This is a re-insertion of my note from yesterday (with, I hope, the
    key word CHARTERING added.)
