I'm new to sailing (again). I spent some time as teenager crewing
out of DeAnza Harbor north of San Diego (about 25 years ago) then
dropped out.
This summer my wife got me a membership to Regatta Point in Worc.
as a 20th anniversary present. SO I'm back on the water again,
but as a novice (strange how stupid you get over the years, at
14 you know everything about sailing, at 39 you know nothing!)
I'm interested in all aspects of sailing, but don't own a boat
[yet] (my wife is already wondering if this present is going
to cost us a small fortune).
Great to see others with simular interests.
If you have any questions on Regatta point and sailing there
(it is great!!) I'll put some info in (drop a reply).
Winds UP! Cast off....(as we used to say in SD)

re .0 Your wife is dead wrong.
Its much more likely to end up costing a *LARGE* fortune. Oh
you may not see it coming yet, day sailers are cheap enough, but
talking yourself up the size and price range is so easy, and 2nd,
or is it n'th ?, mortgages are just an application form away.

FWIW
For any of you out on Salem sound last night, it was I who was
horsing around the bay (Blown tacks, flying a jib as a reverse burpee
etc). I took a couple of the folks from the office out for a cruise
(two of the contractors were leaving, so we decided to go out on the
water for evening).
I was the only one who had ever been on a sailboat before. Rather
than run the vessel myself, I decided to teach these folks how to
sail (ie points of sail, grinding, tacking etc). Heck their all
engineers, they'll figure it out quick right????
Anyways, after half a dozen blown tacks (Wrapmasters - Wrapping
sheets on every beat) they finally started to work the lines right
cranking and tailing. Then they took turns driving the boat. Then
we went behind the starting line of the racing boats where they saw how
close the boats got and how skilled the crews had to be. By the time
we headed in, we had our act together and looked like old salts.
It was one of the best ways to teach people teamwork. By the end
of the night, they had all had a great time and learned to work in
unison. If you have a chance to take the folks you work with for a
ride on nice night, give it shot. May give a shot of morale to your
team, and certainly will introduce some new blood to the sport.
