Does anybody know what is going on with the Route 1 Newburyport Bridge ? Last weekend I had to wait 40 minutes for the bridge to open. There was no traffic up on the bridge. I tried to find something out from the bridge operator who didn't want to discuss it, except to tell me he would be opening up at 4:00 pm. No luck on 16 finding anything out on 16 either. Since we only need 38' vertical I can make it under the bridge except at highest tides (the bridge has 35 vertical) ? Anybody know what is going on or who to call ? /jim

Newburyport bridge has been experiencing either transformer or hydraulics over-heating caused from age and constant use. As a courtesy I call the bridge early and then head for the city docks for the short wait. I belive the bridge will be opened on the hour every hour, providing there is boat traffic waiting. It would help them out if we all planned to pass at low water, I wouldn't want to see the bridge get stuck....open or closed!! I too need apx. 39 feet to pass under. Dana (Git-Ta-Gitadee) |
