543.1 | answer the question Alan.. | RDF::RDF | Rick Fricchione | Mon May 04 1987 18:59 | 19 |
| I'm hoping Alan will answer Practical Sailors questions regarding
a member of his crew (the teddy bear).
1. Whose teddy bear is it?
2. Does the teddy bear stand watch?
3. Does the bear like tillers or wheel steering?
4. Is a Type I PFD required for the bear?
(It may be unnecesssary since Alan probably restuffed
it with Kapok)
5. Do you rehearse "bear overboard" drills?
The noting community awaits..

| 1. Whose teddy bear is it?
Rex, the teddy bear, like a real person, belongs to himself.
2. Does the teddy bear stand watch?
Yes and no. He is available for hugging at all times.
3. Does the bear like tiller or wheel steering?
He prefers tiller steering when he must steer. However, he
most enjoys watching the windvane work.
4. Is a Type I PFD required for the bear?
I haven't discussed this with the Coast Guard, but I assume that
a PFD is required. However, it is difficult to locate PFDs in
very small sizes. (Would you like to be stuffed with kapok? Rex
doesn't like the idea either.)
5. Do you rehearse "bear overboard" drills?
Yes, but Rex wears his safety harness whenever he is on deck
(he has been heard to mutter that only a polar bear could enjoy
swimming in Maine).

| Alan,
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Rex were to get a pair of blue
yachty pants (you know, the ones with the little green whales
embroidered on) in the mail with an RDF return address.

| Alan,
My sister made up a type III PFD for her bear. It really was not all
that hard her words not mine. Personally I find threading a needle
tough.
