534.0. "DEC goes nautical!" by HIGHFI::CORKUM (CYBORG::/FRSBEE:: CORKUM) Thu Apr 23 1987 13:43

 Digital - To take over Queen Elizabeth 2 & Oceanic for DECworld

   An estimated 40,000 executives from DEC's 1,000 largest accounts are
 expected to attend this September. Digital employees will be housed in the
 560-cabin Oceanic and in about half of the QE2's 909 staterooms. The other
 half will be rented out to DEC customers for more than $150 a night. The
 ships will be moored in Boston harbor for the event. Both ships will serve as
 floating hotels and as meeting and seminar facilities to augment the
 120,000-square-foot exhibition center at the World Trade Center by Labor Day.

    I found myself involved in some peripheral stuff regarding DECworld
    a month or so ago, and we were going over some of the problems
    that the QEII presented. Its quite a job, and I don't envy those
    trying to pull it all together.

    If you think its just a case of bringing the "Love Boat" into town:

              The QEII has been classified as a terrorist target and
              security for this event is quite high. Several
              government agencies had to be notified (CIA, FBI, etc)
              and people may be prohibited from bringing things like
              purses, briefcases, or shopping bags on board.

              Cruise ships are not run like hotels. The entire
              passenger contingent usually gets on and off at one
              time. This will be different. People will be checking
              in and checking out at different times, with the usual
              side-effects on housekeeping, billing, etc. Hotel
              management during the period will not be done by the
              QEII.

              Appparently the ships are going to be in Boston longer
              than is "usual" and DEC may have to split the cost of some
              additional new pilings to make the port authority feel
              comfortable about ships that big hanging around.

              Another ship (the "Oceanic" I think) will also be there.
              Last DECworld there was an incredible shortage of hotel
              rooms. The cruise ships are one way of dealing with
              that. A real problem is who will get a room on the QEII
              and who gets into a "second-rate" lodging like the Hyatt
              :-).

    FWIW (for what its worth)

    Since this is a SAILING notesfile, may I ask;

    Since when have these two vessels caried sails?

    Really, two oversize stinkpotters in SAILING.

    re.2 come on now, do you know of any sailboat that can hold that
           many customers?

    maybe we should start an entry with a petition saying us dec employees
    believe the QEII should be flying dec colors. and the best flag
    around would be a spiniker from stars and stripes with our logo
    on it. I don't think that piece of nylon is going to move the QE
    II around much after she has been moored.

    p.s. If they run out of rooms, I'll always let a couple of customers
    camp out on top of my hobie cat tramp. Not much for service, but
    then the hyatt doesn't have a close up view of the ocean!!!!

534.4Sailing cruise shipsLYMPH::DICKSONNetwork Design toolsMon Apr 27 1987 15:096
There is a modern sail-powered cruise ship. I forget the name, but I have
seen ads for it. I bet they run the engines all the time though - the
thing looks too heavy for the amount of sail they have. (4 masts)

Nowhere the size of the QE2, of course.

534.5Not a Sailboat?BCSE::SUITSTue Apr 28 1987 14:0511
	also re: .2

	What makes you think the QEII isn't a sailboat? I bet the ensign
	alone is bigger than most people's #2 genoa.

	They just use those "auxiliaries" for heating the swimming pools
	and powering the slot machines in the casino ...

534.6Thanks for the Info...ASPEN2::BOIKOTue Apr 28 1987 15:216
    Thanks for the info (.0)..I'll post this to the Power Boats notesfile,
    were it belongs.

    I feel the need..for speed.

534.7A new notes file needed?JAWS::DAVISGil Davis @UPO1-4 DTN 296-4559Tue May 05 1987 11:4318
    Not sure where this one fits in...perhaps all you cruise ship owners
    should start your own notesfile?

    I can see the topics now....

    Bilge pump that only moves 14million gallons per hour...
    Only 40% occupancy in our 1800 rooms...what do I do now?

    or....

    Need a ships captain...all Merrill Stubing's need not apply...

534.8DECWORLD ConflictCSSE::COUTUREWed Jun 10 1987 11:425
    I just checked the "Soundings" calendar and the Newport Sailboat
    Show is right in the middle of DECWORLD. I wish somebody would
    check these things out and take my personal wants and wishes
    into consideration.
