499.0. "Help with Stainless Work?" by CSSE::GARDINER () Tue Mar 10 1987 12:14

I am looking for a fabricator that is experienced with working with
stainless steel parts for sailboats. I need to have some custom
chainplates and a deckplate fabricated for the conversion of my
sloop to a cutter. I have tried the major spar companies and they
don't do custom work. The specialty machine shops are not familiar
with using 316 S/S and want to use 300 or 304 which will stain in
the salt air. Also, the quotes I have gotten so far have varied
from $200 to $365 for the same work.

If you know of any fabricator that I could use, PLEASE let me know.

    Sailing season is quickly approaching.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

A minor spar manufacturer is Metal Mast Marine, in Putnam, CT. I don't
know if they still are in existance, but when they were they did custom
work in many metals.

Another option would be to use existing hardware designed for production
models. A little custom fitting durring your conversion to accomidate standard
fittings might be easier than looking for custom hardware.

good luck

You might give the person who built my new gas tank a call. He's
young and trying to start a business. I don't know how good he is,
although the gas tank looks pretty nice.

Wish I had seen this earlier!!! There are two shops in Rhode Island
which do excellant work. One does tubing, like for pulpits, etc.,
the other can manufacture just about any shape or size from flat,
round and bar stock. I don't have the names with me. I will add
them next week after I have been to the area again.

I am having a mast strap built to hold one end of the vang on my
    wood mast.
