498.0. "20-22' Trailerables" by JETSAM::ALBANO (Albert J. Albano, DTN 223-7778) Sun Mar 08 1987 20:55

    Thanks to this weekend's gorgeous weather, I was out looking and
    gathering information on 22' trailer sailers. I didn't get to see too
    many since we got a late start but did happen to check out a Catalina,
    a used O'Day and a Hunter. Can someone shed some light on the pros,
    cons and characteristics of these. I would like to hear something on
    the S-22, Tanzer and any other trailerables in the 20-22' range that
    you have favorable opinions on.

    I have had several friends who owned Catalina 22s (centerboards)
    and one with a Tanzer (fin). I thought the Tanzer was a dog under
    sail (I had a 25' Seidelmann at the time and literally sailed circles
    around his, while we cruised Long Island Sound with our families). As an
    overnighter, and trailersailer I felt the Catalina was a good value.
    Its not set up for blue water sailing, but in their element (protected
    waters) they are able sailors.

498.2comments on the Catalina 22'MARY::MILNEMon Mar 09 1987 16:2110
    We have had a Catalina 22 for 3 years now and have really enjoyed
    it. It is great for weekend trips, and we've found it to be quit
    an able boat, even under some pretty stormy conditions that we've
    been caught in. We had looked at getting a trailer for it at one
    time approx $1000-1500 (new) but since we live in Newburyport, didn't
    feel we would trailer enough. The boat is now for sale- take a
    look in note #263. I've sailed a Hunter 22' and in my mind, there's
    no comparison.  Good Luck!

498.3I LOVE TANZER 22'SWILVAX::LANEThu Mar 12 1987 18:0618
    I HAD A TANZER 22 A FEW YEARS AGO AND LOVED IT ! PERSONAL OPINION
    SUBSTANTIATED MORE OR LESS BY A SURVEYOR LOOKING AT MY NEW BOAT
    A FEW WEEKS AGO IS THAT HUNTERS ARE NOT GOOD BOATS, CATALINAS ARE
    BETTER AND OF THOSE NEWER ONES ARE CONSTRUCTED BETTER THAN OLDER
    ONES. I PREFERRED THE HEAVIER CONSTRUCTION AND INTERIOR OF THE
    TANZER. ALL OF THIS IS PRETTY SUBJECTIVE AS I'M SURE YOU KNOW !
    IT'S A BUYER'S MARKET RIGHT NOW. THERE ARE A MILLION CATALINAS
    AROUND. I'VE GOT COPIES OF AN OLD PRACTICAL SAILOR AND A RECENT
    SMALL BOATING THAT COMPARE THESE BOATS AGAINST ONE ANOTHER. SEND
    ME A VAXMAIL IF YOU'D LIKE COPIES. I'M NOT IN NOTES TOO OFTEN.
    I THINK USED BOATS ARE THE ONLY WAY TO GO. IN THE 22' RANGE THEY
    SEEM TO CARRY SAME PRICE WITH OR WITHOUT TRAILER SO PLANNING TO
    BUY ONE SEPARATELY WILL BE RELATIVELY EXPENSIVE. I DISAGREE WITH
    OTHER REPLY ABOUT TANZER BEING SLOW. A SEIDELMANN 25 IS NOT A FAIR
    COMPARISON. THE CAPTAIN HAS A LOT TO DO WITH SPEED AS WELL !
    SORRY FOR THE DISJOINTED NOTE. HAPPY SAILING.

498.4Tanzer = fast & Cat. over Hunter and O'dayCASADM::THOMASFri Mar 13 1987 17:3516
    re Tanzer 22
    When we were in South Freeport, there was a Tanzer 22 there that
    owned the Casco Bay small MORC class for the 4 years we were there.
    Point is that it's a hell of a sailboat.

    I'd rank Catalina over O'Day and Hunter for the 22. When we weer
    looking in that size range several yesrs ago I heard some negative
    stuff about Catalina but since then I've only heard complimentary
    remarks about the 22. My personal opinion is that they do the best
    job with the interior space of the the three. If you lokk at used
    boats, you'll have a tremendous selection cuz there are a bunch
    of them out there!!

498.5Another Catalina 22 EndorcementESPN::CHEEVERSat Mar 14 1987 13:4512
    We have owned a Catalina 22 for one year - a 1985 model bought used
    last spring. We found it to be the best boat in this size, especally
    the amount of room - we felt the Hunter and the O'Day were no
    comparision. We have really enjoyed the Catalina so far and have
    no complaints - although I do have strong dreams of something more
    in the 30' range. We also considered the resale value when picking
    the Catalina as our first boat, I believe that it is important to stay
    with know brand if resale is a major consideration.

    Happy sailing

498.6One more for the CatalinaMURPHY::SAFDIEMon Mar 16 1987 13:2218
    We bought a Catalina 22 last year. After looking at many boats I
    felt that the Catalina offered the most value for the money. I looked
    at a Hunter 23 and felt it was not as solidly constructed as I would
    have liked. I also spoke with some (former) Hunter owners who confirmed my
    suspicions. The O'Day seemed well constructed and comfortable but
    after seeing the Catalina I couldn't justify the price difference.
    Another thing to mention is Catalina's responsiveness to customers.
    I had a minor problem with our outhaul on our maiden voyage and
    wrote to Catalina concerning that and some general questions on
    rigging specs. I received a prompt reply, not from some customer
    service person, but from Frank Butler the boat's designer. I was
    very pleased.

    	Good luck with whatever you choose,

498.7ZENTER 21' SLOOPRANGLY::POMERLEAU_BOWed Jun 22 1988 15:1310
    Has anyone ever heard of a ZENTER 21' SLOOP?

    Who built this boat?
    What quality is it?
    What reputation does it have?

    Any info would be greatly appreciated.
