| Sometime back, more than a year I think, Cruising World or Sail
did a "This Family's Perfect Boat" article on the Tayana 37. You
might check back issues.
General question...
Does Readers Guide to Periodicals cover Cruising World and/or Sail?

483.2 | article in Practical Sailor | MTBLUE::BELTON_TRAVI | Travis Belton | Wed Feb 18 1987 07:23 | 11 |
| Also, I'm sure that Practical Sailor did a review of it some time
ago. The one thing I remember is that they said it was not a good
first time boat because of the amount of customizing on the interior
you are able to do; experience is needed to do that right. I'll see
if I can dig out the old issue and send you a copy if you like.
A friend saw one in Pulpit Harbor, ME last summer and claims it
was the most beautiful boat he has ever seen.

483.3 | very brief look | GRAMPS::WCLARK | Walt Clark | Wed Feb 18 1987 09:54 | 11 |
| We sailed one briefly when looking for a new boat in '83. It is
a heavy displacement cruiser, with all the benefits and disadvantages
of same. We thought it was beautifully built (for the price) and
holds up well (the one we sailed had just returned from a 2 year
around the world cruise). The early ones suffered from some inferior
look-alike hardware, but I think Ta-Shing has their act together
now.
We ended up with a moderate displacement boat, because nearly all
our sailing is in the light airs of coastal New England.

483.4 | Aboard soon for the once over | LILAC::MAYO | | Wed Feb 18 1987 14:32 | 30 |
| I am going to look at a 1986 T-37 soon. Seems owner ran out of
funds. I did find an article pp 211-214 in Practical Boat Buying.
Built by Ta Yang Yacht Bldg Co
Problems: hull/deck joint leaky--solved by glassing entire joint
from inside
through-hulls not flush to hull--minor, could be faired
with micro balloons
rudder heel fitting is bronze--susceptible to galvanic
action
fuel tank placement--under V berth too far forward, option
to have under main cabin settees
high center of gravity
substantial weather helm--rake in mast could be adjusted
to more vertical
standard sails of poor quality--stretchy/poor shape from
Lam of Hong Kong
lots of teak--high maintenance
bowsprit--no good lead from rollers to anyplace to secure
anchor rode, chafe on bobstay
Good stuff-
Much of the early problems associated with the boat have
since been cleaned up. Recommended as an excellent
RETIREMENT!!! cruiser for the experienced sailing couple.
Properly handled and equipped she could take you anywhere
with confidence and reasonable dispatch.
Plus a bunch of other things too numerous to go into here.
Thanks,
Tom
