467.0. "Help Furlex vs Harken" by ADS::MACKINNON () Fri Jan 16 1987 12:11
I am trying to decide between getting a "furlex" or
"harken" jib furling system for a hunter 28.5. Yes, I am
very close to buying the new boat. All depends on my first
mate liking the interior. This is a long term purchase, I
am now ready to settle down and do some serious cruising on
the lake. Anybody out there have either system, or any
first, second or even third hand knowledge of the pro/cons of
the two. I have always used Harken hardware, but have been
told that the Furlex system is a little cheaper but just as
good(the dealer told me this). This method of inquiry has
worked great in the past.
Thanks for the help last spring with VC17M, we painted the
bottom of our wavelength and it was easy. We are planning on
using the same paint on the new boat.
Thanks for the help last spring with Prism boat graphics, it
was easy and the results looked great. We will also be doing
the name on the new boat in the same manner. This time I understand
the boat will have to be documented, so I will have to be much more
conservative when it comes to selecting fonts

| None of the folks I know with Harken furling systems have experienced
any problems. I dont know of anyone with Furlex.

| I have done many inquires about all furling systems. Talking to
users of HARKEN they said that they did not have major problems, however
this system seems to be more expensive than other. I talked to Furlex
and they seem to be as expensive as Harken. I selected and bought
for my new boat Beneteau 34.5 , system made by Hyde Stream Stay 2.
For my boat this system was a full 1k less than comparable Harken
and provides much easier method of drum removal for racing and no
exposed delrin bearings to the elements.

467.3 | some question about Hyde Streamstay | ADS::MACKINNON | | Fri Jan 30 1987 13:58 | 12 |

The Hyde Stream Stay 2 system you mention has arroused my interest
"money talks". How does the hyde system work under load? Is the
action smooth and will my 110 lb wife be able to shorten sail in
a blow. I have never had a furling system, my Wavelength has a
head foil II system, and we were into sail changes. My new boat
we want to be EASY. How hard was the Hyde system to instal. I think
I will send to the company for more data and at it to the pile of
stuff I have been acruing.
thanks Donald
