    You might want to ask a dealer for names of people who have bought
    them and ask *them*. Any reputable dealer should be able to give
    you some contacts.

450.2"SECOND OPINION"PENNSY::GREENMon Jan 05 1987 16:2415
    YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK OUT THE "SECOND OPINION" FEATURE IN _CRUISING
    WORLD_. I DON'T HAVE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SERVICE, BUT
    IT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA.

    FOR A SELF ADRESSED ENVELOPE, YOU CAN GET IN TOUCH WITH 3 PEOPLE
    WHO HAVE OWNED THE PARTICULAR BOAT AND WHO ARE WILLING TO OFFER
    AN OPINION.

    ANYBODY WITH ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS?????

    REGARDS.....

450.3Another OpinionCSSE::COUTUREMon Jan 05 1987 16:557
    I contacted "Another Opinion" when I was looking for info on
    Catalina 30's. Of the three names they gave me two came back
    "no longer at this address" and I didn't get a reply on the third.
    However, the Hunter 28.5 is a much newer boat and more likely to
    have a recent listing. By the way, I called Cruising World in Newport
    and they sent out the names.

450.4don't write, telephonePULSAR::BERENSAlan BerensMon Jan 05 1987 17:4217
I am listed in the Cruising World Another Opinion list for two different
boats and have answered inquiries on both. The time required to write
even a brief letter critiquing a boat is substantial. The answer to a
seemingly simple question -- eg, how well does the boat sail -- can be
complex and lengthy. If you telephone, you will get far more
information, you will be able to ask followup questions, and you will
ask less time of the opinion giver. Also take the opportunity to ask
about more than the boat -- ask about the equipment the owner has and
how well or badly it has worked. It is also helpful to the opinion giver
to know how you intend to use the boat, for every boat is better suited
for some purposes than others.

If all Cruising World gives you is a name and address, simply write the
opinion giver and ask him/her to call you collect.

    Practical Sailor sends out questionaires to all subscribers and
    could have a useful body of information. Does anyone know if they
    give out the phone numbers you put on the questionaire?

    Donald,

    A friend of mine is selling a relatively 'new' Hunter which I think
    is the size you are looking at. He recently bought the next size up.
    He's pretty knowledgable about Hunters so I thought I would give you his
    phone number. I have sailed with him and felt the boat was responsive
