433.0. "Salem Willows" by NUHAVN::GREEN () Wed Nov 05 1986 16:36

I just finished my second year as a member of Salem Willows Yacht
    Club and offer the following:

The Club is very inexpensive ->> $150/year +-
Mooring space is easy to come by and almost no waiting list to join.
Launch service is part of the package.
    Easy access to Salem Sound.
    Sufficient parking nearby.
Pleasant (but small) club house with byo meals and refreshments.
    Pleasant membership.

And now the bad news --

    Quite open to the East/Northeast.
The mooring area is a convenient cut-through area for power (and
other) boaters heading up the Danvers River. Either a cutter-
througher or a lobster boater clipped my bow rubrail and left
a small fibreglass repair job for the hull.

On balance, a good deal for the money - no frills with good services.

433.3^^|^^ MORE ON THE WILLOWS ^^|^^ERIE::GREENFri Nov 07 1986 15:0739
Bear in mind that this is a small and simple club....nothing fancy.

initiation fee is on the orderr of $20.00
launch runs from 7:30 am+- to 9:00+- summer weekdays - longer on
      weekends
the building does not have any land associated with it. It is
located in a public park (Salem Willows) run by the city of Salem.
There are historical reasons lost to antiquity as to why and how
a private club can remain on public property. The facilities
are basically a dock with a good sized cottage (Pullman kitchen,
dining area fitting about 10 table of 6 people, 2 toilets, shower,
porch overlooking the Danvers River.) I have seen no area for
storing dinghys. They can be launched from the float. A small
amount of personal storage space is available in a common "oar
      locker" on the porch.
Parking is nearby in the park. I have had no problem with security
in either my car or my boat. Others have reported some breakins
on their power boats and material damaged or stolen.
I can get there from my home in Bedford in about 40 minutes. From
128, there is a traffic laden trip along numbered highways. Early
to mid-Saturday/Sunday am it takes about 15 minutes.
I provided my own mooring hardware, but it is available through
a vendor. The club has a mooring tender with a small outboard
      for fix-it-yourselfers.
No boat lauching/hauling/storage facilities at all.

The negative can be a real negative in hurricane season - it is
    exposed to the East.

I wasn't looking for members with my note. It started out as a
reply to Charley Safdie's inquiry about Salem in general, but I
haven't worked out working out with notes yet.

The contact name and number are at home. Glad to get it asap.
    Gas on the float.
Tie up space on the float for 3 boats. Depth at low tide on the
      shallowest side = 4ft+-.

433.6** Update on Dues and Wait **MARINR::DARROWThe wind is music to my earsThu Mar 28 1991 11:0614
Just spoke to Financial Secretary last night.

Dues still $150 Plus $85 'maintenance'. If you put in 5 hours of
labor, this charge is waived for the following year.

    	Initiation $75.

This club can't be all that bad, they now have a list with at least
a 2 year wait. It cost $50 to get on the waiting list. (non
refundable). It costs $25 a year to stay on the list also non
refundable, but applicable towards your initiation and first year's
    	fees.
