428.1 | New record | AKO539::KALINOWSKI | | Tue Jul 16 1991 13:41 | 11 |
| According to American Sailor magazine (USYRU publication), this record
now belongs to longshot or similiar name. It is multihull using
two Neil Pryde designed sails (windsurfer style) in conjuction with
a main. New record is a 40 knts and change.
The boat is sponsered by N.P. and Duracell. The guy's last name is Long
and he is the owner of the Duracell Ultimate 30 . Article was really
good. Told of a crash and burn at 35 knts. Film made CNN twice that
day. Duracell people say it's great cause people love to watch crash
and burn scenes. Sick puppies huh?

428.2 | Longshot | CHEST::BARKER | | Wed Jul 17 1991 04:41 | 15 |
| The skippers name is Russell Long, who was skipper of the 12-Metre
Clipper in the Americas Cup trials ( 1983 ? ) and who father, Huey,
owned a series of Maxi's called Ondine.
The boat is a foil borne trimaran, with 2 or 3 windsurfer type rigs,
depending on wind condidtions, mounted across the boat.
I don't think the record beats the existing sailboard speed records,
but is the fastest for a proper boat ( ! )
There were several pictures, including ones of the big crash, in Yachts
& Yachting recently.

The record he hit is 43 knots.
By changes to different sized sails, he also has several of the
different class multihull speed records too.

| re .5; True that the politican Huey Long died years ago. But the
previous note said that the _father_ of the man who just set a record
was named Huey, not the man who set the record. So the fact that the
politican is dead doesn't mean he's not this guy's father.

| I believe the ONDINE Huey's real first name is Sumner, and he's
certainly not deceased.

p.s. Ondine VI (?) is for sale... might be a little pricey, but who
knows, times are tough...make him an offer.

428.8 | tri-foiler sets yet another record | POWDML::SPENCER_J | Commuter from the Other Cape | Wed Nov 18 1992 14:42 | 13 |
| N.B.--This is entered here, since I couldn't find the note containing
the previous discussion this adds to. (Alan, if you know where it is,
please feel free to move this reply.)
Russell Long recently set yet another world record for a sailboat, on
July 7th becoming the first sailboat (excluding sailboards) to break
50 mph in an officially recognized run. He clocked 43.55 kts (50.08
mph) in his tri-foiler "Longshot" in Spain. The current all-out speed
record under sail (held by a sailboard) is 44.66 kts, held by Thierry
Belak. Long has been clocked at more than 46 kts in gusts, and hopes
to set a new record soon.
John.
