427.0. "first aid kits" by RDF::RDF (Rick D. Fricchione) Sun Oct 26 1986 14:58

    In taking my boat apart for the fall I was going through my first aid
    kit and looking at the condition of its contents. Scissors,bandages,
    tape, antiseptics, dramamine, ammonia sticks, etc. All jammed into
    a waterproof tackle box that I got at spags.

    I put this one together because the little dinks you get out of a
    catalog aren't worth the money you pay (mostly for the red cross on the
    outside of the box) and didn't have what I thought should be in one. I
    basically thought about what things that were likely to happen
    (seasickness, boom bangs, rope burns) and prepared for that. I didn't
    consider major surgery to be likely.

    Anyone care to comment on what the contents of a decent first aid
    kit should be? Or just what you usually carry?

    Rick

427.1Maybe start with a book?GRAMPS::WCLARKWalt ClarkMon Oct 27 1986 08:2012
    My wife ordered a book on first aid from Dolphin books last winter.
    We built up our first aid kit from its recommendations for coastal
    cruisers. I will check on the name/publisher and report back.

    Needless to say, we feel the info is very useful for both a "kit"
    and the daily sundries that we now carry. There are also some helpful
    first aid procedures, but mostly it suggests a lot of items, their
    uses, packaging for sea, and precautions, which makes it worthwhile
    to keep a copy on board.

    As a retired Captain of a Fire Department Ambulance Company, I have
    equipped my first aid kit along the lines on our Jump Kits carried
    aboard the ambulance. I agree, for boating, I may have gone overboard.
    However, here is a list of what I carry:

    o	4 x 4 compresses (qty 8)
    o	2 x 2 compresses (8)
    o	5 x 9 compresses (8)
    o	Band Aids (1 box)
    o	Tape 1" (2 rolls)
    o	Tape 2" (1 roll)
    o	Triangle Bandages (3)
    o	Kling Bandage 2" (4 rolls)
    o	Kling Bandage 3" (4 rolls)
    o	Kling Bandage 4" (4 rolls)
    o	Bandage scissors (1)
    o	Tweesers (1)
    o	Asperine (1 bottle)
    o	Multi Trauma dressing (2)
    o	Splints (1 wire splint)

    In addition to the above, I carry certain equipment that I have
    been trained to use. These include:

    o	Blood Pressure cuff
    o	Stephscope
    o	Set of airways
    o	Pupil Light

    To the first list add:

    o 	Eye bandages
    o	Eye shield
    o	Splints (1 long and one short wooden splint each
    o	Bottle of steral (sp) water

    Except for ther wooden splints, this all fits into a medium size
    canvas bag that my wife sewed up for me.

    Hope this helps

    Paul

    An excellent book is "the Crusing Sailor's Medical Guide" by Leone
    and Phillips, David McKay Co. (really!) NY. It includes most of
    the stuff in .2, plus a bunch of extras that make interesting reading.

427.4any more?RDF::RDFRick D. FricchioneTue Oct 28 1986 00:489
    re .-1: Thanks, Ill check it out when I hit the bookstore, or in
            the next blurb from Dolphin.

    re .-2: Thanks, thats kind of what I was looking for, I figured
            I could make splints out of other stuff on board, but
            I'd be interested in what others carry.

    As an update to .2, I checked my kit last night and found that I

    	o	Hot packs (4)
    	o	Chemical Light Sticks (2)
    	o	Tongue depressors (4)
    	o	Rubber gloves (surgical)

427.6The Cruising Sailors Medical GuideGRAMPS::WCLARKWalt ClarkMon Nov 24 1986 09:507
    I finally remembered to look up the guide we keep aboard. It is
    the same as .3.

    I recommend it highly.
