418.0. ""V" Insignia on sails??" by AKOV05::KAUFMANN () Thu Oct 09 1986 11:10

    The sails of the boat I've recently purchased have a
    "V" insignia on them. What does it mean ? If this is
    a manufacturers insignia, does anyone know who's it is?

    What does the "V" look like? Many times its not the sail maker
    but the maker of the boat who puts their insignia on the sail.

    Could mean "Vixen", for example.

    * Who'll probably feel awfully stupid if you just come back and
      say "like a 'v'"....

418.2Venture by McgreggorADS::MACKINNONThu Oct 09 1986 13:288
     It's probably a "VENTURE" by Mcgreggor. Is the boat a 20,22,23,25
    foot boat. I owned a Venture 23 "cutter", a nice first boat.
    The sails are usually made by Neil Pryde International. The "V"
    is located at the top third of the mainsail.

    Is the V a large emblem in the upper third of the main, or
    a sewn on patch in the corner containing a V ?

    I have Sails by VanZandt Sailmakers in Mystic Ct. which have
    the smaller patch. I think they were absorbed by a larger
    outfit a couple years ago.

418.4It looks like ...AKOV05::KAUFMANNMon Oct 13 1986 22:4511
    It is a plain black 'V' near the clew, several inches above the
    boom. The boat is a 16' Snipe manufactured by Lofland Sail Craft
    of Wichita, which I believe is out of business. There is a 'V' on
    the Main and Jib, which leads me to believe is a Sail makers
    insignia. There are no other markings on the sail except the
    class emblem and clas number.

    Is that what the VanZandt Sail emblem looks like ??

    The V on my sails is blue, in a round patch about 3" in diameter
    and surrounded by a blue circle. I think it also says VanSandt
    Sailmakers in small white print on the blue circle, but I cant
    be certain. I know the blue faded a lot after washing. The
    color may be coincidental. The Tartan emblem and hull number
    in the upper third of the main is also blue (in keeping with
    the cove stripe/boot top color) so the color of the patch may
    be chosen to match the sail.

    You might give the folks in Mystic a call to see if it is one of
    theirs, or who might have made it.

    Well, thanks for your replies, I will continue to poke around
    and if I find out I will post it.

418.7V for CLEW?USSCSL::PASCUCCIWed Oct 15 1986 11:274
    I think the "V" only indicates "This is the CLEW" My Neil Pryde
    sail had the same marking.

418.8V FOR VENTUREWILVAX::LANEWed Dec 10 1986 17:124
    I BELIEVE "V" IS FOR VENTURE, MANUFACTURED BY A COMPANY NAMED
    MCGREGOR IN CALIFORNIA KNOWN PRIMARILY FOR TRAILABLE SAILBOATS.
