392.0. "North Shore guest moorings" by PUNDIT::MCWILLIAMS () Thu Aug 28 1986 10:28

     With the three day weekend coming up, and the weekend forecast
     looking (strangely enough) acceptable, thoughts have turned to
     cruising.

     I am out of Newburyport (and provided I can get out the inlet)
     I would like to go South for an overnighter. Since I don't
     sleep well at anchor, I was wondering where I might be able to
     rent a guest mooring in the Gloucester/Beverly/Salem area over
     the weekend.

     Does anybody have an experience with these areas ?

     /jim

    You might try the Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly. They charge $10.00
    a night. They are on the right side as you enter Beverly.

392.2Safe anchorage in Sandy BaySWSNOD::RPGDOCBrains clogged? Call Rent-A-WriterThu Aug 28 1986 11:5415
    Sandy Bay, Rockport has good bottom for anchoring off Front or Back
    Beach, protected by the breakwater stretching across to seaward
    (most of it submerged between Straitsmouth and the visible portion).

    There is a restriction on bringing dinghys up on the beach so you
    may have to row into the Harbor to go ashore. Check with Shorty
    Lesch, the Harbormaster for Rockport.

    There'll be a band concert Sunday night on Back Beach at the banstand.
    You can enjoy it from your boat. I'll be at the house there on
    Back Beach. What's your boat, I'll watch for you?

    BILGE BREATH....HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO PAY? IF YOU WANT, YOU CAN
    MOORE AT THE EASTERN POINT YACHT CLUB (BUT IT GETS ROCKY EARLY IN
    THE AM WITH THE BOAT TRAFFIC) OR THE BEST BET IS TO GO AROUND THE
    CORNER TO MANCHESTER YACHT CLUB. (MOST OF THE FOLKS FROM WHAT I
    GATHER ARE GOING EAST AND NORTH). I HAVE YOUR APPLICATION, BY THE
    WAY.

    RE: .2

    Sorry to have misinformed you. Turns out the Band Concert scheduled
    for Sunday night was cancelled despite an announcement in the
    Gloucester Times.

    Also it turns out Shorty is no longer the Harbormaster in Rockport.
    Local scuttlebutt has alluded to a long standing fued with certain
    local lobstermen over waiting lists for mooring rights which seems
    to have boiled over this year and caused the removal/resignation(?)
    of Lesch as Harbormaster, a job he's held since the '50s.

    On Saturday night I counted 19 sloops, 1 catboat, 1 ketch and 5
    stinkpots. On Sunday night there were 18 sloops, 1 catamaran, 1
    yawl, 1 ketch and 1 stinkpot.

    One sloop was from Ohio and by its chafing gear on the shrouds and
    self-steering vane, it looked to be on an extended cruise. Went
    by the name of "Pot of Gold" and seemed to be soloed.

392.5Let's update...ROYALT::FGZFederico Genoese-ZerbiFri Aug 23 1991 19:3918

This note is quite old and the info may not be up to date.

I'll be cruising along the North shore the first week in September on an
Albin 28 and I need to find some good transient moorings/slips to overnight
at. I am not concerned with showers, bathrooms or any such, since I'll be
going home frequently, but launch service and cheap prices are a must.

Any suggestions? I'm interested in anything between Nahant and just north of
Cape Ann. The more suggestions the better -- I won't be staying in thes same
place for more than 1 night I figure.

Oh, the boat draws 6' and I don't like to make it close, if you know
what I mean. Places with easy night approaches deeply appreciated.

Thanks.
F.
392.6Manchester & GloucesterMEMORY::LAZGINFri Aug 23 1991 22:0714
    Federico,

    I'm an Albin member at the Boston Harbor Sailing Club. I've stayed
    in Manchester Harbor, all the way back, on a transient mooring,
    by the fuel dock, for $12.50. The harbor is long and narrow, and
    very calm, for a good nite sleep.

    Also, Gloucester has a smaller, inner harbor, that is protected,
    and is near the neck. Not may mooring in there.

    I'm on my way, for a week sail in Maine, so good luck.

    Last summer, when I called the Manchester Harbormaster for info on
    guest moorings, he referred me to the Manchester Yacht Club.

    They provided me with an overnight mooring at no charge; launch service
    included. I simply called them on VHF and told them the harbormaster
    had suggested I contact them..

    I am not a member of any yacht club, so I was pleasntly surprised by
    their hospitality.
