345.0. "Broker for small boats?" by RDF::RDF (Rick Fricchione) Thu Jun 26 1986 09:45

A friend of mine (non-employee) asked via arpanet mail to post a couple
of questions here.

Rick

------------------------- message follows --------------------------------

	1. Are there any boat brokers, preferably north of Boston, who have
a broad, on-site selection of boats in the 20-24' range? A dealer
with an S2 franchise would be optimal. Used (or do you yachting
types say previously owned?) boats in the yard/water even better.

	2. Is there anyone, anywhere in New England who rents out boats of
this size on a daily basis? Costal only. Not interested in inland
	   waters.

We could go back to our old sailing school and rent a Merit 22' for
$350/day. For that, I could fly to Miami round trip and rent a Hunter 28.5 for
the day at Miami Marina!

Mike

You might try Sailboats Northeast in Marblehead or in Portland Maine.
I bought a boat last December from Amy Wallace at the Marblehead
office. This is a very professional and well run operation.

If you can get to the South Shore, I would also recommend Lawson
Yachts in Hingham. Sam Lawson is a very knowledgeable, friendly
and non-salesy type of person. I bought my first boat from Sam.

I don't think you can go wrong dealing with either of these people.

As far as renting boats goes, Sam does "private placement" chartering,
but larger than what you're interested in.

    Rick,
Rick, are you a yachting type?! Just becuz you come to work in your red
pants and topsiders and that cute little black cap, doesn't mean
    you're a yachtie.

Wells Yachts in Marblehead used to have a large collection of boats
in their shop. I'd bet they also have access to a lot of used boats
they're brokering. I know their Hingham office has a whole slew
of boats, new and used. Brown's, in gloucester usually has some
long listing in the trade press. Your friend better call first to
    check about the sizes though.

Havencraft (Sudbury) and Steve Mehl's BoatHouse (Hingham) might
be better bets for small boats. BUT, you better tell Mike to beware
of sharp practices in both of these establishments. I don't know
    if they charter.

    Ed
Hope you didn't mind my mentioning your clothes to everyone.

As far as charters, Wells, again, does daily (and longer) charters

I didn't see John's reply since we seem to have written them at
    bout the same time.

I'll second his recommendation of Lawson. Over the years they've been
the most open (honest?) brokerage I've talked with. I don't think they
have many new boats in stock but I'd guess they have a lot of used
listings both in and out of the water. I think they sell Sea Sprite and
Islander. They're in the Hingham shipyard. Turn left when you get to
Hewitt Cove Marina and Lawson's is on your left. Bob Hoglund (Sailing
Notes founder, bless his heart) has/had his Pearson 26 listed with
    them. You out there Hogy?!

Sam is no longer handling Islander Yachts. They went out of business
about a year ago. He is a dealer for Sea Sprite, J Boats, Nordic,
Southern Cross, Scanmar and maybe one or two others. An interesting
historical note: The new Nordic 34 is really the old Islander 34
that Bob Perry had designed with both a winged and fin keeled versions.

    I just read Ed's reply.

For the record: I have *NEVER* worn red pants with topsiders
    		      and a black hat.

I apologize. I got the outfits confused. Rick wears GREEN pants
(the kind with the little blue whales on them) with topsiders and
that the little Greek captain's cap. He really cuts quite a salty
    figure.

    Sorry for the confusion.

You know...I try not to dignify Eds comments by writing some
    long and humiliating reply, but..

Green pants, blue whales and greek fishermans cap sounds more
like one of the tackier pages in the BLISS marine catalog.

Having seen Ed wearing one of the famous "ADMIRAL" sweatshirts from BLISS,
    this of course makes sense.

    Rick

    * Say Ed, maybe someone should send you a J.Crew catalog?
