344.0. "inflatable cleaning" by RDF::RDF (Rick Fricchione) Tue Jun 24 1986 23:23

I dragged my inflatable dingy out of its bag a couple of weeks ago
and, after inflating it, got down to work trying to scrub it clean
and bright. I cleaned it prior to its being hastily stowed the
night before Gloria, but it doesn't seem to have that same look
as it did when I bought it last year. I stripped down the teak
floor and re-oiled the wood, so thats in good shape, but the rubber
stuff (forgive me for forgetting g the real name.. hyp-a-something )
    seems determined to stay dirty.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get an inflatable to come
clean? Its an Achilles LT-4 (grey/yellow).

    Rick

There are some vinyl cleaners by Boat-Life and MDR which do a nice
job on fenders, dock cords and neoprene raingear. They usually have
names like fender cleaner, etc. I dont think any of these will
hurt the neoprene coating on your hypalon. I also noticed that
Ammonia works good on vinyl, but its a bitch to breath and dont
know what the longterm effect might be on neoprene.

By the way Rick..How's life at rock'n'roll marina this year?

      cleaning inflatables "good stuff cheap"
I tried something differant this year, on a recommendation from
a friend with an achiles DT-4 like ours. Comes in a white plastic
bottle made by SEAPOWER call(of all things) "Inflatable boat and
fender cleaner"(something like that). I picked the stuff up from
"Bliss"(or whatever its called these days),probably can be had from
    E & B marine also.(just checked no not at E & B, I got it this spring
at the store off of 128 in Woburn) Its in a white bottle with a
gray and white label. You apply this stuff to the boat, let dry
and wipe off . The boat will look like new(better) also the Hy-pshhs
fabric will feel softer. This stuff is also great for fenders.
I have tried other products, none better than this one nor easier
    to use. Good Luck Don

The SEAPOWER stuff worked great. Thanks for the tip. Its not cheap,
(about $6.00) but it did the job and I only used a little of it.
The grey/yellow Achilles now looks like new again, and doesn't have
that dingy look. It also seems to work like an "Armor/All" protectant,
which is nice considering I leave it inflated most of the time.

    I think you've created a monster!!

Rick told me that he used the Seapower stuff on his yachty pants.
(You know, the green ones with the little blue whales embroidered
on) Now I'm afraid he'll come after my Admiral sweatshirt (It's
    really only a Commodore shirt).

    Stay tuned!
