331.0. "Mooring search" by HYDRA::BROWN () Fri Jun 06 1986 11:00

	I am in the process of purchasing a 28-foot Sabre. She's
in Narragasett Bay and I'm trying to find a mooring somewhere in
the Bay area. Naturally, this is incredibly late in the season to be
looking for a mooring. I've found two possibilities -- Conanicutt
Marina in Jamestown, and Tripp and Sons in Westport Point, Ma.
Given those two choices, I'd like to hear opinions of which would be
better. Westport is much cheaper than Jamestown, but I understand
entrance to the harbor can be tricky. Jamestown is a better location
for Bay sailing, but the location seems unprotected. Opinions?
I'd particularly like to hear from someone whose sailed into Westport.

331.1Rivers and other hazardsIMBACQ::SIEGMANNFri Jun 06 1986 11:1912
    I've sailed in/out of Westport several times and had no trouble.
    It's a 'typical' river entrance and has a few hazards and with the
    tide outgoing and an opposing wind it could be rough-ish but the
    prevailing winds are not into the mouth. As I recall there are a
    few outlying rocks etc and you have to wend your way around a
    bit at the entrance but a nice place. Sandy beach after entrance
    and not too swift currents. But this is all with reference to
    the Merrimack River... I liked Westport better than Jamestown
    for anchoring and it is better protected. Jamestown has a tide/
    current which sweeps things around but is close to 'Mecca'.

  I pretty much agree with Ed in .1 although i had a more interesting
  time trying to anchor in the river. I was heading over to Newport
  to watch the Cup races a couple of years ago and got fogged in
  in Westport. A Hinckley 42 and I danced around each other for
  a couple of hours while the current and tide had a fight over
  who was in charge. Finally solved when I was spun around on the
  anchor and wrapped the rode around my keel. This convinced me
  to pick up a spare mooring for a couple of days 'til the fog
  lifted and the owner (fellow Sabre) came back. It was time to
  leave anyway.

    I have a friend who has had a mooring in Jamestown for several
    years. It is a convienent place, but very choppy if the wind is
    from the east to north, or there is a lot of power boat activity
    in/out of 'Mecca' (re: .1). I stayed there on the hook once and
    dont recommend it as a place to relax. Folks dont seem to lose
    boats there though, so I suppose it is protected from the biggies
    well enough.
