I HAVE A SIGNET 1000 AND A SIGNET 1500 PURCHASED IN SPRING 1983
I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH EITHER INSTRUMENT. THE SIGNET 1000
HAS AN ALARM SYSTEM THAT WILL OVERIDE THE KNOT METER WITH A LOUD
ENOUGH BEEPING SOUND. I HAVE HAD A MINOR PROBLEM WITH THE ALARM
GOING OFF FOR NO APPARENT REASON, A FELLOW SAILOR CALLED SIGNET
THEY SAID IT WAS DO TO THE WAY THEY COMPUTE THE DEPTH(SOMETHING
ABOUT MICRO CODE) BY NOW I WOULD THINK THAT PROBLEM IS FIXED.
THE ONLY DISADVANTAGE I CAN THINK OF IS THE CHANGING OF MODES
IN ORDER TO READ THE LOG. IF I HAD MORE ROOM ON THE BULKHEAD
AND I HAD TO DO IT OVER AGAIN I THINK I WOULD GET SIGNET, BUT
INDIVIDUAL INSTRUMENTS(MORE EXPENSIVE MAYBE?-BUT WHEN IT COMES
TO "THE BOAT" WHO CARES).

| Signet has a great reputation for reliability. The drawbacks I
see with multiple functions are:
1) Unless the display supports all functions at once you have to
select a function to see it. If things get busy at the helm,
you dont really need another button to push to get information.
2) If the instrument head goes down, you stand a very good chance
of losing all functions. The same is true for the central
computer driven instrument systems around. A distributed
instrument system is less cost effective but losing the speedo
display or microprocessor isnt likely to take the depth sounder
with it.
