253.0. "Skipper, etc." by GRAMPS::WCLARK () Fri Mar 07 1986 07:56
Note 247 got off the track just a bit, talking about dealers, warranties,
adjustments, etc. Most notable was Skipper.
Some of their statements go overboard describing the need for adjustments
to some electronic gear (knotmeters, depthsounders, wind instrument for
example).
I personally feel that with a couple exceptions of Lorans with several user
or automatic filters, getting a unit set for the geographical area you normally
cruise is a good idea. This is based on 10 years of Loran-C equipment
experience in the Navy, not their literature.
Some VHF radios are also pretty poorly set up at the factory, as well as
radar units. (Also my experience with my own business servicing marine
communucations and radar in the 70's).
When I went looking for a Loran last season, after compairing sales taxes,
shipping, list prices, antennas, etc., I found that Skipper was within
$10 of the most agressively priced discount mail order house. On top of
the product they through in an adjustment, and an environmental stress
burn-in, plus 2 cents worth of dessicant inside the Loran.
So maybe they get carried away on warranty threats, I feel I got an excellent
value.
:-) Walt
