214.0. "Helms 25" by CURIE::LAZGIN () Mon Dec 23 1985 11:13

I'd like some info. about the HELMS 25 foot sloop. I believe this is
a Calif. boat, both for the design and manufacturer. I have never seen
this boat on the east coast. Is Helms still in business? What is the
quality of his boats? How do they perform? Who owns one?

thanks
Frank Lazgin

The following info is from the current BUC Used Boat Price Guide:

Mfg: Jack A Helms Company, Hwy 60, PO Drawer A, Irmo, SC 29063

24' 11", Helms 25, Keel/Centerboard, Engine Unknown, 8' beam, disp 3950lbs,
draft 6', Ave retail $15,600 - $17,700 (1980)

In 1979 they called the same boat a Helms-Dolphin, ave price $12,600 - $14,300.

In 1978 is was a Helms 25 and worth $$14,300 - $16,200.

Looks like changing the name also affected it's market value unless there were
other changes not apparent from the info given.

The boat is an orphan, production stopped in 1980. Helms currently (1984 anyway)makes the following: 23'11", 26'10", and 32' boats.

Most of the Helms boats had Yanmar diesels, including some smaller than the 25' but it appears that this particular model is only fitted with an outboard.
