211.0. "Interthane +" by GRAMPS::WCLARK () Mon Dec 02 1985 10:12

At the beginning of this season, I painted my boottop with Interthane +,
a 2 part polyurethane finish. This was done over the factory original
1 part polyurethane (also by Interlux) after preparing the surface.

The paint went on great and looked great all season. Gloria left her
mark in several places when the dock finger submarined my boat several
times during the storm.

This fall when she was hauled I decided to refinish the boottop on a nice day.
I sanded and smoothed the surface (several rubs had gone to the gelcoat),
wiped down and applied the Interthane + again. Everywhere that a rub had
gone to the gelcoat, the paint that bordered the gelcoat (probably a combination
of 1 and 2 part stuff after the sanding/fairing) lifted. I left the areas alone
and think with a light sanding and some touch-up in the spring, it will look
fine.

Has anyone else experienced this problem ? Any idea what caused it and how to
avoid having it happen again (assuming this isnt the last time I must refinish
the boottop) ?

Thanks,

Walt

Walt,
I have no answer to your problem but the Interthane/Interlux people do
have a toll free number which I have used for advice a couple of times
and found them very helpful.
If you are needing any small quantities of primer or wash by the way
I still have some cans of various things lying around which I don't intend
to use. If you want I can check to see what I have and you are welcome to
them if you are in the Marlborough or Westminster area.
                                                                   Bill.

Thanks for the offer, Bill.

I also have primewash, epoxy primer, and about a hundred other thinners and
solvents. I checked the boat this past weekend. It looks as though a light
sanding with 400 Wet/Dry and slight touch-up will do the trick for me this
time. I will plan to call International however, becaused I am certain to
have this happen again (scratches, not Gloria I hope). Thanks.
