I'm thinking of purchasing a catamaran which has only one glitch: mildew on both the jib and mainsail, as a result of the former owner leaving the sails in the trailer's catbox. Otherwise, the sails are crisp, clean, and barely used. I called a local sailmaker and he suggested that while a clorine solution will rid the sails of the mildew, it may also break down the crispness of the sails (comparable to what fabric softeners do to cloth). The sailmaker suggested leaving the mildew on the sails, but I find it offensive from an aesthetic perspective. The sale of the boat doesn't hinge on this - but bargaining does. Does anyone have any experience with mildew removal? Thanks, Bob

I'VE NEVER HAD THAT PROBLEM, MINE'S GETTING THE SALT OFF AFTER A SPECTACULAR PITCHPOLE !! ACTUALLY YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY A SAIL BLEACH. MURRAY'S MARINE WILL SELL IT TO YOU. IT IS ABOUT $7 FOR BOTTLE. IT IS SUPPOSE TO TAKE OUT ALL KINDS OF SAILS, YET LEAVE THE DACRON ALONE. THIER NUMBER IS 805 684 8393 IN CALF. YOU CAN ALSO TRY SSI (SAIL SYSTEMS INC.) THEY CARRY ALMOST THE SAME PRODUCTS THEY ARE IN CHICAGO. YOU MAY TRY STEVE MEHL'S IN HINGHAM OR SMALLCRAFT IN HARWICHPORT. THEY CARRY A LOT OF THESE MATERIAL IN STOCK. A BRAND NEW PRODUCT THAT WAS INTRODUCED IN THE OCT ISSUE OF HOBIE HOTLINE IS A SPRAY THAT IS A UV BLOCK. IT WAS DESIGNED FOR ULTRALIGHTS, BUT IT WORKS EQUALLY WELL ON CAT SAILS. IT WILL KEEP YOUR SAIL MORE SUPPLE, KEEP THEM FROM BREAKING DOWN FROM THE SUN, RESIST GREASE BETTER, AND IF YOU HAVE COLORED SAILS, IT IS SUPPOSE TO BRING BACK SOME OF THE COLOR THAT MAY HAVE FADED. I AM GOING TO TRY THIS OUT THIS WINTER AND WILL LET YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE LOOKS OF YOUR SAILS, MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT GOING TO SEE ANY PROBLEMS AS YOU FLY BY THEIR RATHER SLOW MONOHULLS ANYWAYS!!! JOHN' | |||||

I have had some minor mildew problems when my white mainsail cover was washed without re-waterproofing. I talked with the Ulmer/Kolius loft in E. Greenwich RI, where I am having the sails washed and chafe panels added this winter. They said they would use a solution similar to commercial bleach on the portion of the sail with mildew. They cautioned against me using anything that harsh because of the problem I would have providing a thorough rinse. U/K has a tub large enough to wash and rinse very large sails with the sail spread out flat. Considering the cost of professional cleaning (U/K was getting $.15/sq. ft.) vs. the cost of replacing a sail which failed early due to residual cleaning solutions - I chose the professional. Good Luck. Walt |
