CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE AS TO HOW I SHOULD BACKUP THE TRAVELER THAT I'M GOING TO INSTALL ON THE TRANSOM OF MY TYPHOON. THERE ARE NO HEAVY STRUCTURAL PARTS BACK THERE TO BACKUP TO, SO I HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER WAY.

A plywood backing plate under the deck should suffice. The dimensions of the backing plate should exceed the traveller's by several inches in every direction if possible If you can't get one continuous piece in there then use individual backing plates for each fastener. Bolt the traveller through the deck and the backing plate with large washers on the underside and you should be in good shape. Use a good bedding compound under the traveller and you might also want to think about using a wood preservative on the backing plate. There is a large number of books available in bookstores and libraries that can walk you through an incredible number of do-it-yourself projects. Ferenc Mate is one author with several books for the do-it-yourselfer. Check some of these books out before you go to far. They can save you a lot of trouble and extra effort. What kind of taveller are you putting on? Have fun, Ed

182.3 | Garhauer equipment??? | HPSRAD::HOWARTH | Tue Jul 02 1991 11:10 | 13
Does anyone have experience or knowledge of Garhauer equipment??? I saw a traveler system that included track, car and controls last week that was installed on a boat at my marina and I was impressed. The system had a 5 foot track, 4:1 purchase, used ball bearings and looked far more impressive than the Harken or Shaefer systems that I have looked at for my Hunter 30. The system was supposed to cost out in the $250 price range, substantially less than the other systems. I don't have any other information (yet) such as dealers, catalogs and so forth. Incidentally, the equipment appeared to have a 10 year warranty because each piece was stamped with the year that the warranty expires, in this case the year was 1999.
